“I look in yet another direction and see directly across from me our neighbor, Angela King Gallery, where windows display strikingly breathtaking sculptures by the sculptor of the haunting “Children of Whitney” statues at the Whitney Plantation, a place that holds so many of my professional memories. Woodrow Nash’s “dread head and bonnet” wearing figures possess the same stark, hollowed-out eyes I remember well. “

Led by prominent New Orleans poet and spoken-word artist Chuck Perkins, the night blended heavy poetry with a live jazz groove to honor Scott-Heron's impact on Black liberation and modern music and to commemorate Juneteenth.

The event featured an elite line-up of musical heavyweights backing the performance including Master Drummer Herlin Riley, Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton, powerhouse vocalist Erica Falls, and premier local bassist Grayson Brockamp— world class New Orleans music at its finest!
