"Rockport Boats" is complete!! I took the reference photo last August when my husband Dan and I took a trip down to Rockport on our anniversary. I actually loved these boats, and the entire scene, that this is the second time I have painted them. I loved the composition and the colors!!

Last fall my son and his wife had to say good by to their beautiful girl Sansa who was just 8 years old. It was heartbreaking for our whole family but especially for him.

I wanted to do a memorial painting for his birthday and and knew the perfect reference photo of the 2 of them take outside our condo. They were both so happy whenever they were together - just look at the smiles on their faces!!

Last night I gifted it to him and he was surprised, touched, and thrilled to get the painting. Now I am now able to share it with you.

I am blessed to be able to do this for him and extremely grateful to have had the input of master watercolorist during the creation of this piece. I could not have done it without her! (More to come on that later) I am also grateful to Jean at Northeast Digital for her help in always choosing the perfect frame for my projects.

I’m slowly working through my pile of artwork I prepared before my wrist surgery. In between the reveal of each painting, I thought you might enjoy seeing some of my past artwork.

This is a watercolor and colored pencil piece. I’d intended it to be pure watercolor but honestly I just couldn’t get the effect I wanted with just watercolor. I’m not a purist when it comes to my artwork. I believe it’s perfectly fine to use different mediums within one piece. The colored pencil is mainly in the foreground.

My absolute favorite part is the reflection in the glass!! Does this evoke any memories? I’d love to hear about that in the comments.

I love all things that tell a story, things with a history- weathered and worn. In this piece, I love the old windows, the peeling paint everywhere, and the light and shadows. I especially love all the details!

What about you, are you a person who loves things with character - aged things?

First painting completed since my wrist surgery on Monday! I took a photo of this mother and daughter last August in Gloucester, Massachusetts, but the setting was completely different. I really wanted them on the beach off to start their day of adventure so I made those changes. I'm really happy with the results!

Now I am struggling to come up with a title that fits. Any suggestions?

Edit: these are photos of upcoming paintings not the paintings themselves.

So I know my page has been a little bit quieter than usual. There is a very good reason for that. This coming Monday, I will be having surgery on my left wrist to fix a tear in the cartilage. The recovery time is 3 months. Thankfully this isn't my dominate hand but that wouldn't stop me from painting anyway!

So I have been working hard to prepare multiple pieces of artwork. Involved in that is soaking and stretching the paper, ensuring the photos are the best quality they can be, and getting the drawing onto the paper. It's been a lot of work.

So here's the 9 that I have (almost) done. The last one is a special request from my son and daughter in law of Newport Harbor Light House. I have to tweak the image just a bit more before getting the drawing onto the paper.

I don't know if it will be enough to keep my busy the entire time but I will have my husband to help me if I need anything.

Two days, two classes, two great groups of students!! We had a fantastic time in both classes and it’s always a pleasure to see how different everyone’s paintings come out!!

Thank you to everyone who came out to play with watercolor painting with me. You all did a fantastic job!!

Behind every finished painting are dozens of studies like this one.

This was a practice piece where I explored new watercolor techniques while paying close attention to light, color harmony, and keeping the composition simple. Every experiment builds confidence for the next painting, and I enjoy the journey as much as the finished pieces.
