We regret to share the white bison calf born at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in early May has died. We recognize the cultural significance that a white bison holds for many tribal nations and are working to communicate with them in a timely and respectful manner. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners are gathering information and evaluating the circumstances surrounding the calf’s death.

A 70-year-old woman has tragically died after being attacked by a bison. She was hiking the Grace Coolidge Trail with her husband.

Recent death at Custer State Park in South Dakota

A woman was hiking with her husband in South Dakota’s Custer State Park when a bison charged at her. She ultimately died of her injuries. The 70-year-old woman from Canada has not yet been identified.
