“We’re All in This Together” at Oil Lamp Academy! Come join us for the upcoming “Theater Makers Teen Musicals” Classes this fall!

Together with Oil Lamp teaching artists, participants will create their own characters and develop their own Teen Musical, inspired by and including songs from shows like “High School Musical,” “Hairspray,” “Mean Girls,” and “Grease!” Join us for weekly practice in acting, dancing, and singing while the group devises a new twist on popular songs and stories.

About Theater Makers classes: No one is in the background in Theater Makers classes! Weekly class time includes learning about acting and script-writing while making a unique show for the final performance. Each performer will have lines and their time to shine!

Ready to find your funny? This beginner-friendly class, led by experienced comedy writer Scott Levy, is for anyone who has ever wanted to write comedy but didn't know where to start. Each week with Scottt, attendees will create a short sketch and get supportive feedback. Sessions explore different comic styles and all will jump into low-pressure writing exercises to get the imagination moving. By the end of the course, you’ll have created some original scripts and have the confidence to keep the jokes coming.

Calling all creative performers and whodunit fans: Put down the game pieces from CLUE and join Oil Lamp Academy this summer for a theater camp full of mystery and drama! Young performers will increase their knowledge of theater, script writing, and character development while collaborating on a play. Together with Oil Lamp teaching artists, campers will devise their own mysterious whodunit play, sharing their performance on the last day of camp!

It's a Summer Camp Teacher Spotlight!

Joining our Education Director Whitney Minarik as an instructor for "Lost in Time," starting June 8, is Jo Parish! And campers may still register for “Lost in Time” and join Whitney and Amelia!

Meet Amelia (she/they) is a theatre maker and teaching artist. Chicago area credits include The Paramount (HAIRSPRAY), Theo Ubique (NEVER BETTER), and Timberlake Playhouse (HAIRSPRAY, BIG FISH, BIG RIVER, and ALMOST HEAVEN). Regionally and internationally, she has performed at the Goodspeed Opera House, The Muny, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and the AEMI World Clown Festival in China, as well as the North American tour of PEPPA PIG’S ADVENTURE as the titular pig. She holds degrees in psychology and human services with a focus in child and adolescent development from Drury University. She studied musical theatre at Webster Conservatory for two years and completed the improv training program at Upright Citizens Brigade NY. Make sure and check out her neuroinclusive children’s music project, CAPTAIN AJ!

Last call for registration! Are your 5th - 8th graders ready to go on a time tripping good time with “Lost in Time?” It’s anyone’s guess who we might encounter during this camp led by Education Director Whitney Minarik. Maybe the queens from SIX or the paper boys from NEWSIES? Perhaps we’ll meet the founding fathers from HAMILTON or catch a ride in the DeLorean from BACK TO THE FUTURE. Students will increase their knowledge of acting, singing, dancing, and script-writing while creating a performance that transcends the decades. We’ll be blending characters and songs from history and popular historical musicals into one show that will stand the test of time! At the end of the camp week, a showcase for all will celebrate a week full of fun and creativity!

Are you ready for this summer camp coming in mid-June? “Princesses & Knights” is perfect for little ones with BIG imaginations! At Oil Lamp Theater’s creative drama camp for children entering grades Pre-K - 1, campers will learn about theater and being an actor, while exploring their own unique creative expression and imagination. The theme of “Princesses and Knights” will guide games and activities and serve as the inspiration for characters and dramatic play.
