This weekend’s concert, Mother Ann: Simple Gifts of Shaker Music (today at 4 p.m. and also available on demand), explores the musical legacy of a unique group of believers. As Carol Medlicott put it, “For the Shakers, the process of producing music was deeply embedded in the everyday lives of all individuals, in all communities, east and west. Every believer possessed equal potential for experiencing a musical ‘gift’ that could be integrated into the ever-growing repository of music ... Songs came from women and men, teenaged to elderly, white and black, mixed-race and immigrant believers.” Experience their music TODAY, at the concert in D.C. or virtually: https://revelsdc.org/2024/shaker-concerts/

This afternoon's concert, Mother Ann: Simple Gifts of Shaker Music, will include Jubilee Voices' performance of "Pretty Mother's Home" by Patsy Williamson Roberts, who was of mixed race and enslaved in Madison County, Kentucky. She and her enslavers converted to Shakerism, a faith they later renounced but she kept to. The Pleasant Hill Shakers purchased legal freedom for Patsy Roberts, who then made her home at Pleasant Hill and composed many songs reflecting her faith and referencing Mother Ann Lee, the founder of Shakerism. Wake up, everyone! It's the final day of May, and clarinetist Seth Kibel—who dazzled everybody on Purim Family Day in March and at The Christmas Revels: Celestial Fools in 2019—and pianist Sean Lane teamed up for a special music video: Klezmer & More for Jewish American Heritage Month. We found this vintage 2023 video just in time to get everyone dancing from May into June. Music starts about 5 minutes in. Let's go!

Chances are you’ve heard the Shaker tune “Simple Gifts,” but the wider musical legacy of the Shakers—a community dedicated to equality—is about to ring out in D.C. this weekend in a concert like no other! Come hear the Jubilee Voices sing Eunice Freeheart’s “Come Love, Come Love” at Mother Ann: The Simple Gifts of Shaker Music. Elderess Freeheart, daughter of an enslaved woman, Elizabeth Freeheart, came to the South Union Shaker community in Kentucky as a child. Both mother and daughter were composers and had long and productive lives in their faith and musical community! It’s Throwback Thursday, and we’re looking backward—to look ahead! In 2006, Washington Revels had an Early American Christmas Revels that included songs from the Shakers, heard in this highlights video. This weekend, we return to the musical legacy of this early group of egalitarian pilgrims when the Heritage and Jubilee Voices ensembles join with The Capitol Hill Chorale for Mother Ann: The Simple Gifts of Shaker Music, with concerts this Saturday and Sunday and thereafter available on demand! May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and on this Throwback Thursday, we’re celebrating with this Season of Reveling video: a celestial message and some lovely moments with Shizumi Shigeto Manale, the author, choreographer, dancer, director, and producer whose artistry we experienced when she was featured as one of three tradition bearers in The Christmas Revels: “Celestial Fools” in 2019.
