Elvis recorded "Suspicion" first, on March 19, 1962, written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, the same pair behind hits like "Surrender" and "His Latest Flame." πŸŽ™οΈ It went on his album Pot Luck, but RCA never released it as its own single, just tucking it onto the B-side of "Kiss Me Quick." Two years later, in 1964, a singer named Terry Stafford recorded his own version that became the actual hit, peaking at #3 on the Hot 100, in the exact same week the Beatles held the top five spots, breaking their monopoly on the chart. Most people today assume Stafford's was the original, when it was really Elvis's version that came first and went largely unnoticed. Decades later, in 1976, Elvis's own recording finally became a hit in its own right, when RCA reissued it as a single in the UK and it climbed to #9. 🎡 Elvis Presley - SuspicionπŸ’– Listen the song in the 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

This song almost went to Johnny Cash instead of Elvis. Songwriter Don Robertson pulled the title from a line in Carl Sandburg's book The People, Yes, then drove to Cash's house in Ojai to play him the demo personally, bringing his own son along since he was a huge Cash fan. 🎸 Cash never showed any real interest, so Robertson sent the demo to Elvis's publishers instead, and Elvis liked it enough to copy the demo's arrangement almost exactly. Recorded May 26, 1963, at RCA's Studio B, it was meant for a full album that never actually got released, with the songs instead scattered as bonus tracks and single B-sides over the next several years.🎡 Elvis Presley - What Now, What Next, Where To?πŸ’– Listen the song in the 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

"Aloha Oe" wasn't written as a tourist song. Queen Lili'uokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, wrote it around 1877-78 after witnessing a real farewell between two people on horseback near Kaneohe Bay. 🌺 Two decades later, she used the same song as her own farewell to an independent Hawaii, written during her house arrest after the kingdom was overthrown and annexed by the United States. Elvis recorded his version in March 1961 for the Blue Hawaii soundtrack, opening it with a traditional Hawaiian chant unrelated to the original song, sung by a group called The Surfers, before he comes in on just the chorus. It's one of the few genuinely Hawaiian-language songs Elvis ever recorded, as opposed to the English-language "hapa haole" tourist songs that made up most of that soundtrack. 🎡 Elvis Presley - Aloha OeπŸ’– Listen the song in the 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

"If I Can Dream" was written overnight, replacing a planned Christmas song, after the show's director decided Elvis's '68 Comeback Special needed a real finale. Walter Earl Brown wrote it deliberately echoing Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, two months after King's assassination and weeks after Robert Kennedy's. 🎀 Elvis recorded it in complete darkness, lying nearly fetal on the studio floor. Director Steve Binder remembered it vividly: "He was in an almost fetal position, writhing on the cement floor, singing that song. And when he got done, he came in the control room, and we played it maybe 15 times. He just loved it so much." Elvis's manager Colonel Parker hated the idea, calling it the wrong kind of song for him, but Elvis pushed back and got his way, later saying, "I'm never going to sing another song I don't believe in." 🎡 Elvis Presley - If I Can DreamπŸ’– Listen the song in the 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Elvis's "Surrender" actually started life as a 1902 Neapolitan ballad called "Torna a Surriento," and Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman wrote entirely new English lyrics for it in 1961. 🎀 Pomus initially saw it as just another writing job, nothing special, until he heard what Elvis did with it. His co-biographer later described the reaction: Pomus had to admit Elvis "could make a mediocre song distinctive, make a good one great, and make a great one indelible." It became Elvis's twelfth #1 single and his fifth #1 in a row, but in a strange twist, it also marked the end of his total chart domination. He'd only score two more #1 hits over the next sixteen years of his career. 🎡 Elvis Presley - SurrenderπŸ’– Listen the song in the 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
