“… With wastes of thirsty waiting between…”
- Edith Wharton

I came back to myself
Like a lover long parted
Unsure if the feelings remained
Trying to catch myself
With quick stolen looks
My mind whispering a dozen lies
Before she faced me fully and
Into her eyes I tripped and fell
The irises spoke to me of desire
Heedless of our future, of life, of death
I kissed her lips until they became mine
Pulling back, sunrise spilled into her face
She gifted me her portion of hope
Which is and always will be enough

Snake Charmer

I woke up to snakes in my belly
Unfurling from the eggs I’d eaten
Curious and furious
In the darkness of my body
They mapped me blind
They slithered through me
They hissed into my brain
They crawled to my fingertips
They wormed around my heart
They could find no escape and
There was nowhere to truly live
The heart was too thunderous
The lungs were too windy
The brain was too full of lightning
I wanted them gone
They wanted to be gone
I ate capsules that lit up neon
I poured sunshine into my ears
I swallowed light fixtures
I hung my mouth open with song
Desperate to coax their departure
For a century I devoured light until
Like the overnight spring buds opening
My innards squirmed no more
My crowded lungs could fill
My brain was quiet again
They slid from their human home
They gave me back to myself

“It cannot hold”
-Florence Welch

I can’t be your dream woman
My face is not so inspired
For Degas though DaVinci might try
My body is a limerick not a sonnet
Beauty passed over me
Like someone marked my mother’s womb
It’s alright, it’s ok, I promise I don’t care
Too much
But I am a woman
Afraid that the term
Doesn’t really apply to
Anyone less than Aphrodite
Because I am no dream, nor myth
I am simply reality

In the madness of me
I forgot how to live
My muscle memory failed
An echo of a question
Forming always at the back
Churning with unfed reason
Like the two headed calf
Aware of its malformation
The farmer wonders its purpose
Knowing it was born to die
But unsure of the reason why
Never daring to ask his God
Instead he simply cleans his gun

The Great and Powerful

As I look down from the high tower
Someone new is approaching
Dread replaces my lifeblood
I am awaiting the halfhearted
Shrug that twitches to life
Only to lay at my feet as docile
As a well fed old cat

To you I sing again but
This poem is just another
Attempt at spilling my blood
Without any of the mess
Reality is a peasant word and
I’m a pretentious bitch

I throw down a replica of myself
Let me lull you into my arms
They’re always kept outstretched
I pull them with puppet strings
Taking “at arms-length” to new heights
Or, I suppose, widths

You can kiss me on my mannequin lips
When you feel their coldness
You may feel inclined to
Pull my hair, chop off my limbs
Or even cut out my plastic heart
Do what you must
It’s my fault anyway

Just get on your steed and
Pay no attention to that woman waiting in the high tower

The Old Thing

For now my fear is fed
Well-rested and warm
I am young, it will wait
But in a hundred years
When it rises betrayed
Eyes on the hand that fed it
Pulling a knife long forgotten
From my back pocket
To cut her neck and spill
Fearful unknowing blood
Just before the final
She will remember why
She clawed and flailed so
With eyes blinded by omens
Like a stranger in my body
As the drums stop rolling and
We are swept onward nevertheless
Nevertheless never the less bound
Forever to some neverness

Roadkill

The face of death
Lies in the middle
Of the road
A scream in her
Unhinged jaws her
Neck impossibly bent
A possum that
Isn’t playing dead
There are no
White crosses to
Mark what happened
She will be taken away
And eagerly forgotten
Suddenly everything is
Not enough and it is
Too much for the
Wind sweeping my brow
The guitar’s mournful glide
Spring’s kiss upon my skin
Itch me like parasites
I need something rough
To match that face of
Perfect agony asking me
Will you ever do the
Things that scare you

Resurrection

My fingers stopped itching
For a pencil or paintbrush
They fell with exhaustion
With the weight of expectation
And forsaken inspiration
Then like a heart shocked
It came back to me
An eager, God-like creationism
My old Promethean ache
Startled out of this dispassion
By humanity, always humanity’s beauty
The rakish curve of a man’s jaw
As it undulates in peerless song
Lips provoking in their playful demurity
Tucked into the cheek, holding back a smile
Pale eyes cool even in the sun
Glinting cat-like with secrets
And it’s always more than just my lust
My selfish gnawing to swallow whole
Anything and everything that intrigues
There is this immutable force
Begging to be conveyed, to be shared
As if I could somehow display all
I feel and desire and love
In a thousand strokes of my brush
The filaments of my tiny universe
Laid bare in every graphite caress

To the Sticking Place

I wasn’t long in the woods
Before I came to think that
The things I expected of myself
Probably would never happen
I was too old to start again
Too young to think I needed to
There didn’t seem to be any door
That my shaking fingers would unlock
Instead I just paced around the hallway
In the perfect complacency of purgatory

(For my sister)

Wait with me my darling

Wait with me my darling
Show me there’s more than
This present anguish and I’ll
Wait with you forever too
Until we can both sigh in excitement
When the sun is rising again

Careful with my heart
It isn’t fragile but heavy
You tell me you’re strong and
I always believe you because
I’ve seen a smile in your eyes
Lit at midnight by a blue light

There are no words I seek
First and foremost besides your own
Deliberate and honest communications
Fuel to my modest ambitions and
Tomorrow I’ll remind myself to feel
Today I can’t cope with all your love

Dance with me my darling
In the forest of my mind
Eat tangerines and lemons by the bonfire
Tell me about the gold you found
Let us light one another’s way
Let us hold hands in the dark

For I would try to take you back to Texas and
You would wait forever with me on the moors
