Now that we’re back home and mostly recovered from the weekend, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who stopped by my booth at NWBHA Finals! It was very busy, and I’m incredibly grateful to those who entrusted me with their horses.

Now time to rest and regroup! Looking forward to the next one.

✨ What a difference one massage can make. ✨

These photos were taken before and immediately after her massage session—and I love this example because the change isn’t about suddenly creating more muscle. It’s about how the existing tissue is resting and moving.

In the before (top) photo, you can see a more pronounced depression and sharper transition through the area behind the scapula and below the withers. After her massage (bottom photo), that same area appears softer, fuller and more uniform, with a smoother transition into the topline.

During a session, I work through areas of muscular guarding, restricted fascia and abnormal tissue tension. When those tissues begin to relax, we can sometimes actually see the difference in the horse’s body.

And that’s the goal of bodywork: not just making a horse “feel good,” but helping restore more normal tissue mobility so the body can move more freely and efficiently.

🐴 If only horses could talk…

My job would be SO much easier.

Instead of spending a session playing equine detective, they could just say:

💬 “Actually, that saddle has been bothering me for three months.”
💬 “My left hip is tight because I’ve been compensating for my right hind.”
💬 “I know I’m sore. I also know I tried to tell everyone by pinning my ears, refusing to pick up the correct lead, and dramatically acting like the cinch was trying to murder me.”

And my personal favorite…

💬 “No, I didn’t hurt myself working. I did it running around the pasture like an idiot at 2 AM.”

😂

Unfortunately, horses can’t tell us exactly where it hurts — but their bodies do.

Changes in posture, movement, muscle development, sensitivity, behavior, performance, and even how they respond to touch can give us clues about where they may be uncomfortable or compensating.

That’s a big part of what I love about equine bodywork: figuring out what the horse has been trying to say all along. 🐴💙

Have you ever noticed a horse with a very prominent or overdeveloped serratus muscle just behind/below the shoulder blade—right where the front of the saddle sits?

Bigger doesn’t always mean stronger.

The serratus ventralis is an important stabilizing muscle that helps suspend the horse’s trunk between the front limbs and supports movement of the shoulder blade. When the horse is moving correctly, it works as part of a much larger system.

But when there are saddle-fit problems, the body may start changing how it moves to avoid pressure or discomfort.

A saddle that pinches, sits too far forward, restricts the scapula, bridges, rocks, or concentrates pressure near the front of the tree can encourage a horse to brace and alter how the shoulder and trunk move. Over time, some muscles may become overworked and more prominent, while neighboring areas may become tight, sore, guarded, or even underdeveloped.

This is why I don't look at one muscle in isolation.

If I find an unusually prominent serratus, I also look for:
• Tenderness or tension behind the scapula
• Asymmetry from left to right
• Trapezius or latissimus tension
• Atrophy or hollows around the withers
• Restricted scapular movement
• Shortened stride or reluctance to reach forward
• Sensitivity where the front of the saddle/tree sits
• Changes in the horse's topline

Muscle development can tell a story about how a horse is using its body.

An enlarged serratus doesn't automatically mean the saddle is the problem, but paired with soreness, asymmetry, restricted movement, or other compensatory patterns, saddle fit should absolutely be part of the conversation.

Massage can help identify and address the muscular compensation, but if the source is saddle pressure or restriction, we also need to address the equipment creating it.

Treat the compensation. Find the cause. Help the horse move better. 🐴
