The incomparable Carolyn Colquitt is a multi-talented pianist, composer, and vocalist with over 40 years of musical expertise. Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, Carolyn began her musical journey taking formal piano lessons at the tender of age of 4 years old. By the age of seven, she played gospel hymns in church accompanying her father as the song leader during Sunday School. Carolyn expanded on
her musical gifts by studying a new instrument. Starting in the 4th grade, she began learning violin and studying classical music. This continued all through high school and landed her a full college scholarship at Valparaiso University in Indiana. There she earned a Bachelors Degree in Music Education, and later a Masters of Art Degree in Music Performance from Indiana University. Colquitt is a recently retired Wake County Public School educator. Throughout her career, she has taught piano, music theory, choir, and orchestra for students ranging from elementary, to middle and high school. As a professional performing artist, Colquitt has graced stages all over the world including Russia and a European tour through Switzerland, France, Germany, England, and Austria. Carolyn’s Holy Land tour culminated with a performance in Bethlehem Square. Her Italy tour included a concert on the Spanish Steps, as well as a mass at the Vatican in Rome before the Pope. These are some of her favorite musical memories. In 1999, Carolyn relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina where she held the position of Minister of Music for Baptist Grove Church of Raleigh. In addition, she has been the Musical Director for prominent musical theatre production companies such as North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre (NRACT), Justice Theatre Project, Li V Mahob Theatre Company, and Raleigh Little Theatre. Around town, Carolyn can be seen performing with, and as the musical director for the Smooth Ivory Band; a popular, sought after, eclectic group of musicians who play smooth jazz, R & B and compose/arrange music for every occasion. Carolyn is proud to have been chosen as the first ever Artist in Residence for the North Carolina Museum of Art in 2021. She is looking forward to creating the next chapter in her musical journey.
