Peggy Wickham Art

Peggy Wickham Art Acrylic paintings, mixed media, textile & other art of Peggy Wickham. Commissions accepted, please message for more information. Although some of my earliest memories are of making art, I started painting in 1976.

While raising our family, I finally I got my BS in Art Education with a focus in painting in 1993. After this, I painted privately until January of 2010, when I began to offer my work for sale.

I thought I'd post a "work in progress". This piece was inspired by an old photograph of me taking my two oldest sons for a sled ride almost 50 years ago . I haven't stuck to the colors and surroundings in the photo but I'm playing with them to increase the emotional impact. The background is not developed yet- that will happen this week I hope.

I am participating in an art fair type event next Saturday so I'm trying to take some old pieces and improve them. I'm really happy with a couple of paintings I worked on last night. The top is the way it was. It was OK, had a lot of texture but to me didn't have much to make anyone want to look at it for more than a few seconds. It is 9x12, acrylic with modeling paste building up the wave and other parts of the painting.

The second is the updated painting. It's "different" but more interesting to me than the simpler version.

Have spent the last two days painting my two favorite sizes of canvas (16x20 and 11x14). Even though I can't wait for summer, I've had these fall scenes percolating in my head, so now they are works in progress.

This is an update for my "planets" commission. Everything is done except Saturn needs her rings. Today I am picking up a 40"x 60" piece of foam core for the rings. They will need almost the full width (40") of the foam core. I will post another update when Saturn is done. This has been a fun project for me as it made me really think about solutions to various problems I encountered while creating these celestial bodies. For example, the structure of them meant I could not simply put them in my spray painting bin in the garage. I used a wooden dowel and some wire to suspend them in a large cardboard box. Even then, it was a learning experience because the spray paint made the planet turn which was ok except it didn't always turn in the direction I wanted it to. Then I discovered that the two largest planets (Jupiter and Saturn) were too big to fit into any box I had. So we took an old glider swing frame (that was left by the previous owner of our house) and suspended Jupiter and Saturn and painted them as soon as we got a day that was not raining or windy. Then I discovered that Jupiter was the same width as my laundry room doorway. Also I realized, not surprisingly, that the paper lanterns are very fragile. Assembling them caused small tears to happen for a couple of them. Blue painter's tape and spray paint over it fixed this problem, which the client was ok with. Update coming soon with a photo of Saturn completed! I hope the client will send a photo of the installation when it happens. It will be a multiple vehicle effort to get the planets to the client's location as we do not want any surprises about the difficulties transporting them. Each will be air pocketed into it's own large cardboard box for it's earthly journey.

Hope you have enjoyed this detailed account of the creation of this installation of the planets in our solar system.

I am involved in an interesting project. (Sorry so long!)

A few weeks before Christmas, a very nice lady emailed me and asked if I would be interested in creating a very large display of all the planets (including dwarf planet Pluto!) for the very high ceiling-ed room where the dentist she works for treats children. I was very interested! The idea they had was to use different sized white paper lanterns that I would spray paint with regular hardware store spray paint in the appropriate colors. When they are hung from the very high ceiling, the kids can contemplate the solar system while they get healthy smiles!

I had a slight delay due to personal stuff, but in late February the order went in for a few of the lanterns to test out this plan. It worked! I have 3 more planets to finish, and a few touches on earth and Mercury, but this project has been fun! I will post a photo of the very non- realistic solar system (minus the sun!!) when it is finished. Here is a photo of my first encounter with Pluto. (It looks completely different now 🤔). Stay tuned for the finished project (fingers crossed it works like I hope it will!)

I have an upcoming exhibit at Artmosphere Community Arts Center in Clayton NC that will begin about the 2nd week of January. The theme will be "Flora, Fauna & Fantasy". I am working on a painting of a phoenix as the centerpiece for this show.

I chose a phoenix because it symbolizes to me that we will all get through this pandemic. We may be changed, but we will "rise from the ashes of the fires we are going through" this year. I will be posting updates for future layers. I'm taking a break from it for the Thanksgiving weekend.

This mythical creature is giving me a great jump out of my comfort zone. It is far from done, but I thought people might like to see the development process of a painting. This piece is 30"wide by 40" high, and is 2" deep. I am using oils and cold wax to create it. It will have a lot more going on in the sky and in the "pyre" when I am done. The phoenix will be more fiery as well.

I began to work on this piece by creating a basic background in blues with a "pyre" of yellows and reds. I used oil sticks to draw in the pyre and the phoenix.

As I worked out the basic outline of the phoenix, I used a spatula to apply the paint and cold wax mixture. I'm now looking forward to applying the next layers.

I would love it if as many of my friends who feel so inclined would "like" my page. If you see two of these I apologize. I just shared it but can't find it 😒🙄🥴. This technique is one of my favorite things to do, although it does not produce realistic pieces, the texture and free-form qualities appeal to many. I've gone back to using this technique because it is easier than painting right now for me.
Peggy Findlay Wickham I messaged in your art group. Fyi: I have friends who like Instagram better
