جولة بصحبة الفنانات راوية صادق وهاجر عزالدين ونادية منير

معرض «استحضار الغياب» الذي ضم أحدث صياغات مشاريع فنية امتدت على مدار السنوات الماضية. عبر سير ذاتية وأغراض منزلية وألبومات عائلية استحضرت الفنانات نساءً ارتبطن بهن عبر سيرتهن وصورهن وعفش بيوتهن المشغول يدويًا. اتخذت الأعمال الثلاث البحث كنقطة انطلاق ولكنها لا تنتهي عنده وتنتج، أحيانًا تعيد إنتاج، ما هو غائب أو أفناه الزمن.
جمعت نادية منير ما سمعته من ملاحظات حول ألبوم الصور العائلي وما يشكله من ذكريات لتستخدمها في التفكير حول ممارستها الفنية المهتمة بالفوتوغرافيا وتاريخها الشخصي وما يجمعها بتلك الصور. أما هاجر عزالدين فراقبت عمل سيدات الطبقة المتوسطة المنزلي وما يستغرقه من وقت ومجهود واختيارات جمالية وتحاكيه في ضوء عملية الإنتاج الفني نفسها والتي يقبع أغلبها خفيًا داخل المنتج النهائي المعروض. على نفس المنوال، فإن البحث الفني الذي أجرته راوية صادق عن أعمال النسوية المصرية الرائدة درية شفيق وسيرتها الذاتية يرسم أوجه تشابه مع تاريخ عائلة راوية نفسها والتجارب المشتركة للنضالات والانقسامات التي تشترك فيها كلتيهما.
عبر الكولاج ومراكمة طبقات النصوص والصور والأغراض المنزلية، ترفع الأعمال المعروضة الغطاء عن تحيزان متشابكان؛ الأول هو التحيز التاريخي الذي عادةً ما يفشل في تسجيل الإيماءات العابرة والعمل المنزلي المستتر والسير الذاتية للعمل ضد الظلم. أما التحيز الثاني فهو داخل الوسائط الفنية المستخدمة والذي تشير إليها المشاريع عبر استقصاء كيف تكتنز الصور والأغراض خبايا لتشكل المعنى. كما تسلط عملية إعادة إنتاج الصور والمنتجات الضوء على أهمية اللحظة الآنية في تتبع تلك التواريخ، ودورها في إعادة تشكيل الحاضر مع الجمهور.

«Retrieving Absence» exhibition bringed together the latest articulations of three ongoing artistic projects. Through biographies, household materials, and family albums, the artists evoked the women they associate with through their biographies, photographs, and the handcrafted furniture of their homes. The three projects take research as a starting point, and produce, sometimes reproduce, what is absent or the time that has passed.
Nadia Mounier has collected comments on the images contained in her family album and the ways in which it constructs memory. She then uses those fragments of texts to reflect on her photographic practice, her own history and the connecting threads between her and the images. Hagar Ezzeldin has observed the domestic labor of middle class women and the time and skills women spend with it. She starts out recording these experiences and relates them to her contemplation of the invisible labor lying dormant in her artworks. Rawya Sadek’s artistic research of early Egyptian feminist Dorria Shafiq’s work and biography draws parallels to the artists family history and the common experiences of struggles and ruptures both women share.
Through collage and layering of text, images, and fabrics, the works in the exhibition reveal two intertwined partialities. The first one is the frequent failure of historical narratives to register fleeting gestures, invisible domestic work and the biographies of action against injustice. The second is buried inside the medium the artists work with and points to the hidden contents of images and how they construct meaning. Through the process of reproducing images and reusing materials, the works unfold their narratives from the here and now and understand the creation of connections to the past as an active social and political practice shared with the audience.

ملحق غروب على النيل كانت سعيده بقراره أن يقدم معرضاً لـ نايس چنيفرإكس، تحت عنوان ديدان وجوازات سفر: فلتنفتح بوابات الطوفان؟ كان عرض للوحات واللوحات ذات ألوانٍ زاهية، لكن كان هناك ورق حائط في الخلفية لصورة لمكان ما، الحركة في فضاء المكان نفسه كانت محدودة. سيكون هناك ملحقاً للمجلد الأول من كتاب الأعمال المجمعة للفنانة تم انتاجه لمصاحبة العرض.

Nile Sunset Annex was content with its decision to present an exhibition by Nice Jeniferex, called Worms and passports: Let the floodgates open? It was a painting show and the paintings were brightly colored, but an image of a place was wallpapered behind the paintings, and the space itself was slightly obstructed. An annex to the first volume of a catalogue raisonné will be produced to accompany the exhibition.

تضم المطبوعة أربعة نصوص ولعبة لرنا أشرف، دينا جريديني، عمر كساب، إنجي محسن، ومجموعة ق.ل. تم كتابتهم استجابة لدعوة للتفكير في مفهوم العمل الجماعي والتعاون بمعناه الأوسع. يتناول كل كاتب الموضوع بشكل مختلف من خلال الاقتراح أو التأمل في خيارات وأخطاء وشكوك سابقة، لإشراك القراء في عملية تفكيرهم. صممت دينا جريديني تمارين للتعامل مع ذاكرة خطاءة، وكتبت إنجي وعمر كساب مانيفستو لمساحة عمل مشتركة مثالية. ناقشت مجموعة ق.ل. أساليب عملها للتوصل إلى شكل تنظيمي يعكس مبادئهم، واختارت رنا أشرف خيوط من أفكارها عن أخلاقيات التعاون وصممتها على كروت بريدية لتتمكنوا من استخدامها ومشاركتها مع الآخرين.
على مدار أسبوعين، ندعو الزوار للمشاركة والتفاعل مع النصوص والمواد البصرية التي نتركها في مساحة المكتبة وكذلك الحصول على نسخة مجانية من النصوص. كل يوم أحد، سنجتمع من خلال فعالية لمناقشة الافكار التي يطرحها أحد النصوص، سنقرأ أجزاء ونتأمل، ونعيد النظر، ونتناقش معكم. النصوص والنقاشات ستكون باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية.

The publication features four texts and a board game by Rana Ashraf, Dina Jereidini, Omar Kassab, Engy Mohsen, and Qaaf Laam Collective. All these are personal responses to an invitation to think about the notion of togetherness and collaboration in an expanded sense. They engage with the subject differently, sharing propositional or reflexive stances on past choices, faults, and doubts, to engage you with their thought process. Dina Jereidini developed an exercise to navigate contradictory memories, while Engy Mohsen and Omar Kassab wrote a manifesto for an ideal co-working space. Qaaf Laam discussed their work processes so far, hoping to develop an ethical organization structure for their collective. Rana Ashraf extracted threads from an invitation to a prospective collaborator and is sharing them with you on postcards to build on.
Over the span of two weeks, visitors are invited to engage with excerpts from the texts and other visual traces in the CIC library, as well as collect their free copy of the texts. Every Sunday, we will hold an event around one of the texts to reflect, revisit, and discuss some of the ideas it raises. The texts and discussions during the events will be in English and Arabic.

المعرض الأول لبرنامج مدركس: معرض ڤايوراما، وهو معرض لمشاريع فنية تستخدم تقنيات الواقع الافتراضي والذي من خلاله لديكم الفرصة في ارتداء نظارات الواقع الإفتراضي وتجربة المشاريع الغامرة والتجهيزات أنشأها المشاركون خلال المختبر.
عبر سلسلة من المحاضرات والأنشطة العملية خاطب مختبر ومعرض ڤايوراما الفنانين والفنانات لاستكشاف إمكانيات الأدوات السـمع-بصرية للواقع الافتراضي وعلاقته بالممارسات الفنية، والإنعكاس على مفاهيم الواقع الافتراضي والأنماط الحديثة للحكي، وخلق نماذج ودمج مشاريع الواقع الافتراضي ليتم عرضها في معرض غامر. مختبر ڤايورامـا بإدارة الفنان الهولندي دانيال إيرنست وبمساهمة الضيوف مورهشين اللهياري، چيسي كومينغ، چورج زكرايا، وأحمد صبور، وبجانـب الدعم التقني من كريم إيهاب ويوسف أبو سمرة من 412labs.
تلى الدعوة المفتوحة إختيار ٦ مشاركين و مشاركات - ملك ياقوت، أحمد نادر، محمد المغربي، دينا جيريديني، زياد أبوغالي، و آية طارق. خلال ٦ أسابيع أتيح لمشاركي المختبر العمل على الديوراما الخاصة بهم بناءً على لحظات شخصية ومميزة. خلال فترة المختبر مُنِح المشاركين أدوات وتقنيات لخلق ديوراما واقع إفتراضي مكتملة من ابتداء الفكرة المبكر إلي تجربة واقع افتراضي تفاعلية كاملة. المواضيع التي تم مناقشتها: تشمل إنشاء الصور المُصَغرة (المسودات المصورة\البصرية)، والـنماذج المكعبة\التكعيبية، التحريك و التصميم التفاعلي، وتصميم الصوت ومراحل ما بعد المعالجة، والتصميم السردي.

VIORAMA LAB & EXHIBITION (360°)
VR ART PROJECTS

The first exhibition of the MEDRX program: the VIORAMA exhibition. You will finally have the opportunity to walk through the installations and room-scale VR and experience through VR headsets the immersive projects created by the participants throughout the VIORAMA lab.
Viorama is a Virtual reality (VR) Lab and Exhibition aimed for artists to explore through lectures and hands-on activities the potential of VR audiovisual tools in relation to their arts practises, reflect on concepts of VR and new formats of narration, and prototype and implement VR-based projects to be showcased in an immersive exhibition. The Viorama Lab was led by Dutch instructor Daniel Ernst with the contribution of guest speakers Morehshin Allahyar, Jesse Cu***ng, George Zakaria and Ahmed Sabbour, alongside the technical support of Karim Ehab and Youssef Abusamra from 412labs.

Following an open call, 6 participants were selected -Malak Yacout, Ahmed Nader, Mohamed ElMaghraby, Dina Jereidini, Zeyad Aboughaly and Aya Tarek. Throughout the 6 weeks, the Viorama Lab participants got the chance to work on their dioramas based on a distinct and personal moment. They were handed tools and techniques to create a finished VR diorama from the early inception of an idea to a fully working interactive VR experience. The topics discussed include thumbnailing, greyboxing, animation & interaction design, audio and music, post processing, and narrative design.

يسر مدرار أن تقدم "لافتات إرشادية"، وهو معرض فردي لباسم يسري يبحث في شكل ووظيفة البناءات المرتجلة التي تنتشر من حولنا، والناتجة بدورها عن ثقافة "التلصيم" و "التلفيق" في حل الأزمات بما يواكب التغيرات السريعة التي تشهدها المدينة. ينطلق المعرض مرتكزًا على النمط الإبداعي الفردي الارتجالي (البراجماتي)، والذي يُنتج بدوره النسق الجمالي الدارج الذي يميز الفضاء العام في القاهرة. يعد هذا المعرض امتدادًا لمشروع باسم يسري الذي بدأه منذ عام ٢٠١٦ تحت نفس عنوان هذا المعرض؛ "لافتات إرشادية"، والذي يبحث من خلاله في ماهية ما يطلق عليه "النسق الجمالي المؤسسي"، والذي يتميز بالعشوائية في إيجاد الحلول لشتى المشكلات؛ لاحظه باسم بالأساس في سياق المباني الحكومية، إلا أنه يمتد إلى الفراغ العام ويسوده.
يتسم هذا النسق الجمالي السائد بالفوضى البصرية، ويعتمد في طرق بنائه المؤقتة على التهجين بين عناصر متباينة تُكسب الأشياء المألوفة معانٍ جديدة. ويعكس انتشار ذلك النسق في المدينة فراغًا عميقًا في البنية التحتية. تتيح تلك المساحة إمكانيات لا متناهية واستراتيجيات مبتكرة ومرنة لحل مُختَلَف المشكلات؛ وتعكس وعيًا فريدًا من نوعه بطبيعة الزمن، فهو وعيٌ غير معني سوى بالحاضر المعاش ويغيب عنه اليقين بما يحمله المستقبل. تتناول الأعمال المعروضة لباسم يسري هذه الحالة بطرق مختلفة وتبحث في أشكال التفاعل الاجتماعي الناتجة عنها، ؛ فهو يبني أعماله المركبة كتجسيد ملموس للطرق الفردية والمؤسسية الارتجالية المستخدمة لحل المشكلات المختلفة في سياق الفضاء الحضري، الذي يتسم بدوره بعدم الانتظام وبالتغير الدائم.
يستمر المعرض في جيبسوم حتى ٣١ مارس ٢٠٢٢
تم إنتاج هذا المشروع بمنحة من المورد الثقافي واليدعم التقني المقدم من أضف- المؤسسة العربية للتعبير الرقمي. المعرض من تنظيم مدرار للفن المعاصر بالتعاون مع جاليري جيبسوم.

Guideposts, a solo exhibition by Bassem Yousri investigating the form and function of structures born of a culture of improvised troubleshooting in a shifting cityscape. The show takes its cues from the creative pragmatism that has created the trademark vernacular aesthetic that permeates public space in Cairo. The works are a continuation of Yousri’s ongoing project, Guideposts, in which the artist investigates what he terms the “institutional aesthetic” — a slapdash approach to problem solving that he first noted in government buildings, but which is also prevalent in public spaces.
Characterised by visual clutter, provisional assemblages, and a hybridity that suggests new meanings for commonplace objects, the prevalence of this vernacular aesthetic is a physical manifestation of an infrastructural vacuum. In this space of potentialities, new strategies of versatile problem-solving emerge, highlighting an acute awareness of temporality and a mistrust of anything but the lived present. The exhibited artworks by Yousri respond, in various ways, to this state, edifying structures that give tangible form to strategies of self-reliance in an amorphous and evolving urban space, and to the forms of social interaction they inadvertently create.
The Gypsum exhibition runs till 31 March 2022.
This project was realised thanks to a grant from Culture Resource المورد الثقافي (Al Mawred Al Thaqafi) and to technical support provided by أضف ADEF (Arab Digital Expression Foundation). The exhibition is organised and hosted by Medrar for Contemporary Art in collaboration with Gypsum Gallery.

يقدم المعرض أعمالا للفنانة الأيرلندية بريوني دون على مدار أربعة أعوام عاشت فيهم فى مصر وفى بلدها الأم. بالأفلام، والتصوير، والتركيب، والنحت، تصنع بريوني مشاريع وثائقية بحثية بتفسيراتها الفنية الخاصة.

تعني أعمال بريوني بالعلاقة المضطربة بين الإنسان والطبيعة، وكثيرا ما تقتفي أثر الروابط الشائكة بين البلدين الذين تعتبرهما موطنها. تتجلى هذه الروابط فى تصويرها وأفلامها المصورة من متحف التاريخ الطبيعى بدبلن، ومتحف القاهرة الزراعى، وحديقة حيوانات الجيزة، وأماكن أخرى.

فى خلال بدايات عملها فى جنوب سيناء، قابلت سيدة بدوية تبلغ من العمر سبعون عاما، تعيش على مدار العام فى بستانها وحدها ومكتفية بذاتها. في يوم، بعد عدة أسابيع من الزيارات المتكررة والمتعمقة، قالت عمرية: “ينبغى أن تصنعى فيلما عنى وعن أطبائي. (بستانها والجبال المحيطة)” تم صنع الفيلم – كمقدمة للأعمال الأخرى فى “عمرية” – وهذا العرض المنفرد بمثابة إهداءً لها.

بريوني دون هى فنانة وصانعة أفلام أيرلندية مقيمة فى القاهرة. بناء على خلفيتها فى التصوير التوثيقي والأنثروبولوجيا المرئية تقوم باستكشاف العلاقات المتشابكة والحميمة بين البشرية من جهة والعالم الطبيعي من جهة أخرى.

This exhibition presents works made by Irish artist Bryony Dunne over the past four years when she lived between Egypt and her native country. In film, photography, installation and sculpture, Dunne draws together research-driven documentary projects with her own artistic interpretations.

Dunne’s work examines the volatile relationship of man with nature, and often traces the thorny historical links between the two countries, Ireland and Egypt, she calls home. These links are manifested in her photography and video works from Dublin’s Natural History Museum, Cairo’s Agricultural Museum and the Giza Zoo, among other sites.

During her early work in South Sinai, Dunne met a 70-year-old Bedouin woman, who lives year-round in her orchard, solo and self-sustained. One day, after weeks of repeated in-depth visits, Amriya said, “You should make a film about me and my doctors [her orchard and the mountains].” That film was made—a prologue to the other works in “Amriya”—and this solo exhibition is dedicated to her.

Bryony Dunne is an Irish artist and filmmaker based in Cairo. Building on her background in documentary photography and visual anthropology, she explores the intricate and intimate relationships between humanity and the natural world.
