🌎💛 October 11 is International Day of the Girl Child!

Every girl deserves space to be curious, ask big questions, and imagine who she might become.

At Red Dog Children’s Museum, we believe every child deserves a safe, welcoming place for discovery—where they can try something new, make mistakes, express themselves, and know they belong.

Whether she’s building a tower, exploring science, making music, or creating something entirely her own, each experience is an opportunity to discover her interests and grow in confidence.

When we listen to girls and encourage their ideas, we remind them: Your voice matters. Your curiosity matters. There is room for you and your dreams. 🦬❤️

Every feeling deserves a listening ear.

On World Mental Health Day, Red Dog Children’s Museum is sharing a simple reminder: children don’t have to be happy all the time to be loved, welcomed, and understood.

Sometimes they need someone to listen. Sometimes they need a quiet moment, a chance to play, or help finding words for a big feeling.

We can start with: “I’m here. Would you like to tell me about it?”

When we make room for children’s feelings, we help them learn that asking for support is okay—and that they don’t have to face hard moments alone.

🍎 Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🍎

Sometimes, a teacher’s biggest gift is helping a child believe: “I can do this.”

Today, Red Dog Children’s Museum celebrates the teachers who welcome questions, encourage another try, and help children discover their own strengths. From the classroom to the world beyond it, you make room for curiosity, creativity, and growth.

To the teachers across Southwest Kansas: thank you for seeing the possibilities in every child—and helping them see those possibilities, too.

🍀 Happy National 4-H Week! October 4–10 🍀

A seed planted. A photograph taken. An animal cared for. A project that didn’t quite work—until a child tried again.

Learning by doing gives children opportunities to discover what interests them, build confidence, and see what they’re capable of. That’s something we love at Red Dog Children’s Museum!

This week, we celebrate the 4-H members, families, volunteers, and leaders across Southwest Kansas who help young people grow through curiosity, responsibility, and service.

What’s a 4-H project or memory you’re proud of? Share it in the comments!

🎶 “Won’t you be my neighbor?”

On National Good Neighbor Day, we’re celebrating one of the lessons Mister Rogers shared so beautifully: every person can help make their neighborhood a kinder, more caring place.

Invite your child to practice being a good neighbor today. Draw a cheerful picture for someone, help with a small task, welcome someone new or simply offer a friendly smile and hello. Little acts of kindness can make a big difference in our community! ❤️

What does being a good neighbor mean to your family?

We need to correct something we shared earlier: Community Cultural Day has NOT been postponed.

We shared incorrect information, and we apologize. The event is still planned for Saturday at the fairgrounds. Please refer to the Ministerial Alliance's event page for any updates: https://www.facebook.com/events/2182620655873007

We value this celebration and appreciate the care and work that have gone into planning it. The many cultures represented across Southwest Kansas are part of what makes our corner of the state such a special place to call home. We had been looking forward to participating.

After discussing with our board, Red Dog Children’s Museum has decided to step back from this year’s event. Tuesday’s events have affected families in our community, and we feel that stepping back this weekend is the right decision for our organization. We respect those who are moving forward with the celebration and hope it brings people together in healing way.

To the families affected: we see you, and we stand with you. We hope to celebrate alongside our community at next year’s Community Cultural Day.🦬❤️

Farming knowledge is often passed from grandparents and parents to the children growing up beside them—and that includes learning how to stay safe.

During National Farm Safety and Health Week, we celebrate the generations of agricultural families who help feed our communities. We also encourage families to begin age-appropriate conversations about farm safety:

đźšś Never approach moving equipment without an adult.
🌾 Farm buildings, grain bins and livestock areas are not play spaces.
đź‘€ Make sure equipment operators can see you.
🛑 Stop and ask an adult before exploring somewhere unfamiliar.
❤️ Take care of your body and look out for one another.

Whether children grow up on a farm or simply live in an agricultural community like ours, learning to recognize hazards helps everyone stay safe.

What is one lesson about farming—or farm safety—that has been passed down in your family?

Today feels heavy for many families across Southwest Kansas. Some of our neighbors are afraid. If that is true for your family, please know that you matter to this community. You belong here, and you do not have to carry this day alone.

Children often notice when the grown-ups around them are worried. We can tell them, in words they understand, “Some people are having a hard day. We’re going to care for one another.” We can help them look for the helpers—and show them how to be helpers, too.

A helper might check on a neighbor, bring a meal, offer a ride, or simply sit with someone and listen. Even a child’s card or kind word can remind someone that they are seen.

Southwest Kansas is resilient. Across our towns and counties, we have come together through hard times before. Please be safe. Check on your neighbors, offer the help you can give—a meal, a grocery run, a ride—and respect their privacy and their choices. We will get through this together. We will get through this together, as neighbors. 🦬❤️
