Southern Railway 2-8-2 4501 to Summerville, Georgia. Operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, the 1911-built Mikado returned to the Southern green-and-gold passenger scheme earlier in 2026, a look it famously had for the Southern and NS Steam program between 1966 and 1996. The 4501 looked and sounded great on the 100+ mile round trip from Chattanooga to Summerville, even through the remnants of Hurricane Isaias.

Plus the first appearance for Southern observation car 21 to Summerville.

A parade of San Francisco’s most iconic historic streetcars could be found over this past Saturday and Sunday (9/19-20/26) as part of MUNI Heritage Weekend. This year’s event was particularly special, as it marked the official return to service of 1914 Jewett Type B “Iron Monster” 162, following over a decade of absence after extensive collision repairs.

In addition to 162, several other cars of and representing San Francisco’s transit heritage were operating between the Ferry Building and Pier 39, and some examples are seen in these sequences. Also making the rounds are Market Street Railway 578 (Hammond Car Co. 1896), MUNI Type A Car 1 (Holman Car Co. 1912), MUNI PCC 1010 (St. Louis Car Co. 1948), MUNI Ex-Philadelphia PCC 1051 (St. Louis Car Co. 1948), and the last PCC built for the US Market, MUNI 1040 (St. Louis Car Co. 1952).

The Bucksgahuda & Western Railroad of St. Marys, Pennsylvania celebrated 60 years in 2026. This two-foot gauge railroad began with the purchase of 0-4-0T 1, named Otto, from Germany in 1966. The railroad grew from a stretch of track for Otto, to a fleet of diesels, about a one mile loop of track, an extension down the old St. Marys & Southwestern right-of-way, and a Shay locomotive.

Argent Lumber Company 2-8-0 7. This 1911-built Porter has been displayed in Hardeeville, South Carolina since 1960.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe SD45-2 5704 was one of five Bicentennial units painted by Santa Fe in 1976 to celebrate America turning 200. It would continue to operate for Santa Fe and BNSF until retired in 2008. Recognizing its significance, BNSF donated the engine to the Southern California Railway Museum, with Mid-America Car & Locomotive repainting 5704 to its bicentennial paint job in 2022.

Central of Georgia 0-6-0T 8 is the oldest surviving CoG locomotive, originally built as a traditional 0-6-0 in 1886. It was rebuilt by the CoG shops in Macon as a saddle tank engine in 1909, serving as the Macon switcher until 1953. It was referred to as “Maude”, named after a stubborn mule character and complete with a mule cutout decoration. Today it’s displayed as part of the Georgia State Railroad Museum collection in Savannah, GA.
