Local artist, Chitra Sharma, shares her thoughts about her piece, "Nostalgia" and about life in Gaithersburg. Her work is part of the "This is Gaithersburg: Art as Civic Dialogue" exhibit now on display at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park. The exhibit will run through September 12, 2021. There will be an artist reception this Thursday, July 29 from 7 - 8 pm.
Chitra in her bio says, "I am an accidental artist! The desire to create had been there from the childhood but the expectations to follow the path set for me, led me to MBA after undergrad. Luckily, I found my way back thanks to my friends, who kept encouraging me to be creative. They would trust me with their projects and in the process, I started loving what I was doing. I am in love with colors! Colors make me happy, fill my space and mind with warmth, character, love and vibrancy. Bold, bright and "out there" concept dominates my creative work, because I myself am all that. I am not scared of patterns, bold colors and mix-match concept. Being from India, having lived growing up years in Bangkok and finally here in my adopted country, I have realized that it all has helped me grow as well as contributed to the art that I make. It has made me more observant of the space and people around me. My art to an audience might represent creatures from mystic land or somewhat color dipped cartoons but for me these pieces represents a personality. We all have a mask that we wear but when with ourselves we take that mask off. As I am growing, I am exploring new aspects of my creativity. My work now has layers, colors are still bold but there is certain subtleness to it. So far, I have been making art for my friends and myself and have showcased my work at certain outlets but now I am ready to expose myself as an artist, ready to take the criticism, ready to share it with the community."
