Today, we honor Charles Gilpin — a groundbreaking force in American theatre and the first Black actor to receive national acclaim in a dramatic role.
Through his powerful performance in The Emperor Jones, Gilpin challenged racial barriers on the stage and redefined the depth, dignity, and complexity afforded to Black characters in American drama.

This Black History Month, we celebrate the brilliance and legacy of Diahann Carroll.

A trailblazer across film, television, and theatre, Carroll shattered barriers and redefined representation. She became the first African American woman to star in her own TV series without playing a domestic worker, portraying Julia Baker — a widowed nurse and single mother — in the groundbreaking show Julia.
Her talent earned her a Tony Award for No Strings and a Golden Globe, but her impact went far beyond accolades. Carroll’s elegance, strength, and artistry opened doors for generations of performers to follow.

This Black History Month tribute we celebrate a cinematic milestone.
In 1972, Dr. Maya Angelou became the first Black woman to have a screenplay produced in Hollywood with the release of "Georgia, Georgia" — a powerful drama that explored race, love, and identity through the lens of an African-American singer traveling abroad.
Angelou not only wrote the screenplay, but also composed the film’s score, making "Georgia, Georgia" a deeply personal and historic work. Though she had limited input in the final production, her voice shaped a story that challenged conventions and expanded representation in film.

This Black History Month, Arcable Film + Theatre proudly honors Lorraine Hansberry, a groundbreaking pioneer of Black theatre.
In 1959, Hansberry became the first Black woman to have a play produced on Broadway with A Raisin in the Sun. Her work boldly confronted racism, housing discrimination, identity, and the dreams of Black families in America — forever transforming the American stage.

More than a playwright, Hansberry was a visionary voice for justice and representation. Her legacy opened doors for generations of Black writers, performers, and storytellers to claim their space in theatre and beyond.

During Black History Month, Arcable Film + Theatre proudly recognizes Oscar Micheaux, the first major African American feature filmmaker and one of the most influential independent producers in early cinema.
Born in 1884, Micheaux directed, produced, and independently distributed more than 44 films during a time when opportunities for Black storytellers were severely limited. Through both silent and sound films, he challenged racial stereotypes, confronted injustice, and created space for authentic Black narratives on screen.
His work laid the foundation for generations of filmmakers who continue to shape the industry today.

During Black History Month, Arcable Film + Theatre proudly celebrates the legacy of The Pekin Theatre — recognized as the first Black-owned movie theatre in the United States.

Founded in 1905 in Chicago by Robert T. Motts, The Pekin Theatre was more than a venue — it was a cultural landmark. At a time when segregation limited opportunity, it provided entertainment, dignity, and a space created specifically for Black audiences.

The Pekin Theatre stands as a powerful reminder of Black entrepreneurship, resilience, and the enduring impact of owning our stories and our stages.

Douglas Turner Ward’s vision helped open doors that transformed the American stage and paved the way for generations of Black artists.
