When I was a youngster, maybe junior high age, I just knew I wanted to ranch. Every aptitude test they handed me said the same thing: farmer, rancher, agriculture.

What nobody really explained was how hard it can be to build a life in this business when you’re starting from scratch.

The generations before me taught me how to work, care for livestock, and keep going when things got tough. For that I’ll always be grateful. But knowing how to ranch and knowing how to create the opportunity to ranch aren’t always the same thing.

A lot of us inherited the knowledge but had to figure out the business side on our own.

That’s something I’m working hard to change for my kids. I want them to inherit more than lessons. I want them to inherit options.

Never fails, especially when calving season and irrigation overlap 😂

I started using cholla cactus and turquoise more than five years ago because I liked the look. Over time it became something folks recognized before they ever saw my maker’s mark.

Every piece of cholla is different. Every bit of turquoise lays a little different. No two ever turn out exactly alike, and I reckon that’s part of what keeps me coming back to it.

This combination has become part of my work, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

A long time ago I was on a path to earn my Ph.D. with the goal of working in equine-assisted therapy. Life took me a different direction, but one thing I learned along the way never changed.

I’ve seen horses bring confidence to people who doubted themselves, calm to people carrying more than they let on, and peace to folks who couldn’t seem to find it anywhere else.

Maybe it’s the responsibility, the partnership, or just the quiet moments spent together. I don’t know exactly why it works, but I know it does.

I’m grateful my kids get to grow up around horses, and I’m grateful I still get to spend so much of my life horseback. There are a lot of places I enjoy being, but none seem to bring me the same kind of peace as a good horse.

There’s something about Buckeye Burl paired with MagnaCut that just flat works.

Got a few pieces wrapped up for Sunday and this one earned a spot at the front of the pile.

There’s a whole lot of ranch knowledge that sounds ridiculous until you watch it work.

A good friend of mine taught me this trick a few years ago and it’s my go to!

When a cow loses her calf or won’t claim one, getting her to accept another can mean the difference between that calf making it or not. Smell is a big part of how cows identify their calves, so sometimes the old tricks still work best.

It may not be glamorous, but it sure enough beats the alternative.

Moses got a burning bush. I’ve got a shovel and a leaking ditch.

Boundaries? I never heard of her.
