“On the Verge”

Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 in

A moment suspended right before release. Energy building, form emerging, and everything just about to break into motion.

This piece pushed me to slow down, trust the process, and let the painting reveal itself layer by layer. Surprised to see my comic book experience show up in this piece.

Available.

Finally finished this one, a mix of fun and frustration.

Working through a fat-over-lean process really tested my patience. I caught myself jumping ahead with lighter opaques in the mane and had to pull back, rework, and trust the layers. There were a lot of moments of second-guessing, corrections, and hesitation… but also a lot of learning in that space.

Grateful for the guidance that kept me grounded and pushed me to keep going.

I’m surprised to see a bit of comic book influence come through. It wasn’t intentional, it just emerged.

Do you see it?

I’ve drawn pineapples in comics and other graphic design elements, so for this charcoal still life from a photograph, I was drawn toward the pineapple reference. deceptively complicated but rewarding when it all comes together!

À la Prima painting, where I decided to homage the tools of the comic inker trade. From the hunt 102 nib, my Raphael 2 sable brush, raised metal ruler, and my lifetime supply of Gillott 850 nibs gifted to me by Rob Liefeld, this was my favorite still life!

À la Prima (in one sitting) oil painting is such a challenge! Finding interesting combinations of items that “tell a story”, arranging them with a good composition, and getting good lighting is just the first set of challenges before you put any oil to canvas!

The Light Finds You is a Studio Study from my transition from comics to oils and mixed media. I was drawn to that quiet, instinctive motion when someone lifts their face toward the sun, not posing, just responding.

Here is a landscape with radiant colors and subtraction. It was a lot of fun but I had a hard time being in my left brain, “Water is blue”. Thankfully my wonderful and talented wife reminded me to look at the reference and pointed out there was so much pink!

What do you think?
