On Saturday night, a little boy handed his dad a leaf with the words “Thank you, Miss Betsy” written across it. Attached was a tiny shell—his gift to me after my Betsy Ross performance.

Here’s the thing…For most of the show, I wasn’t even sure he was listening. He was quietly focused on creating leaf art in his lap, so at the end of my presentation I invited him onstage to help me demonstrate an 18th-century wooden toy.

Then his dad handed me the leaf.

It was the reminder I needed…sometimes the child who seems distracted is actually taking it all in. Some children simply need something in their hands to help their minds engage.

The sweetest gifts aren’t expensive. Sometimes they’re a leaf, a shell, and a quiet reminder that you never really know whose heart you’re reaching.

When you travel 250 years through history and end up getting a shout-out from the mayor… I’d call that a pretty good day...

I noticed a little boy during my show today who looked like he was having a hard day.

After the show, he approached Lucy Goose and began telling her about what was bothering him.

Lucy got down on his level, listened, and nodded as he shared.

When he finished, he looked at her with tears in his eyes and gave her a hug.

He wasn’t looking for advice.
He wasn’t looking for solutions.

He was looking for reassurance.

Sometimes, children will share their hearts with a puppet before they’ll share them with anyone else.

Moments like this remind me that puppetry isn’t just about laughter and entertainment. Sometimes it’s about creating a safe place where a child feels seen, heard, and understood. ❤️🪿
