The Graphic Design class flexed their creative muscles with these banned book cover designs. Each student was given an identical paper bag filled with odds and ends, and a book title. Then they were tasked to put together a cover for the book to be photographed. Students were only allowed a knife and glue while using potentially everything in the paper bag (including the bag itself) for the design. They were not allowed to manipulate anything in Adobe Photoshop beyond color correction. We are very proud of the results.

Renowned commercial illustrator and graphic artist Alex Williamson from the UK has spent the last four weeks as an artist-in-residence for the Department of Art & Design at UAFS. Working with local museums and collections, he’s been exploring archival materials and uncovering a treasure trove of found imagery that frequently shifts from the weird and/or disturbing to the wonderful.

Through collage and use of the “visual essay,” Williamson’s residency project weaves together thoughts and fragments from the past and present, navigating intersections of history, geography, and politics while exploring the making and remaking of memory, myths, and cultural legacy through Fort Smith’s collections and archives.

Join us for a one-night-only installation of this groundbreaking project in the Cooler Room at the Bakery District, Saturday December 10, 6pm – 9pm!

In support of the visual arts, more than $8.8 million will allow UAFS to expand the Windgate Art and Design building, enabling a more immersive public experience of the space and holistic fine arts studios for students and faculty.

“This gift will meaningfully augment every aspect of our department: the ways we educate students in each of our degree programs, the scope of our exhibitions and art collections, and the services and programming we can offer to the River Valley region and to broader art communities,” said Waugh. “This will shape not only how we address our current needs, but will also substantially inform our trajectory going forward.”

“I feel exceptionally grateful, respectfully humble, and ready to get to work,” she said. “It is such a rare, special opportunity to work towards a project that is this transformational, that will have this much impact on each individual student’s education in art and design.

Beginning in 2023, UAFS Art and Design will begin a physical expansion of the Windgate Building, as well as an expansion of curricular offerings through both new courses and broadened existing courses, including book arts, 3D-design, art history, graphic design, gallery and collections, museum preparator training, sculpture, ceramics, and digital fabrication.

TOMORROW IS THE LAST DAY to see the UAFS Student Art Exhibition. This exhibition combines the artwork of students at different levels of their studio degrees. Whether they were painting figures or focusing on a culminating body of work, each student faced the difficulties of creating in a hybrid or distance learning environment. Despite this, the resulting artwork captures formal qualities and conceptual depth, some touching on themes of identity and meditation. Artists featured: Jasmin Vorabouth, Julie Gonzalez, Chris Releford, Tiffany Manikham, Emily Cooper, Kaylee Birkner, and Hayden Nance. UAFS Art & Design

A colorful reminder of hope and resilience in the form of thousands of paper cranes is on display at the Campus Center thanks to an incredible collaboration between Arvest Bank associates and UAFS Art & Design students and faculty.

The display of cranes, folded with care by Arvest associates, aims to create a physical response to increased incidents of anti-Asian violence since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, inspired by the legend popularized by Sodako Sasaki, a victim of the atomic bombing during World War II.

The Studio Art Capstone course at UAFS represents the accumulation four years of artistic development. In her final exhibition, Tiffany Manikham, assembled panels covered in brightly colored lines and strokes. The panels combine to create a mesmerizing optical display fills your entire vision when standing before it.

"'To: You' is a peek into my mental state, especially, how the environment I grew up in has affected me,” Tiffany said, noting that her Laotian culture deeply influences her art. “This work addresses many issues. It shows how being a woman, a person of color, and raised by immigrant parents has affected me mentally. How western and Lao cultural beauty standards influence me. Living in a patriarchal and capitalist society, and constantly surrounded by social media.”

“The main shape is made up of a c shape that is repeated. I developed a single continuous shape to help calm me down when I felt overwhelmed in situations. The motion itself is repetitive, continuous, and therapeutic. It also represents my state of my mind. How one negative thought can lead to another and never stop.”

Julio Gonzales, a UAFS Art & Design student, crafted large-scale portraits based upon close family members for his Capstone class this year.

"These works of art are an expression of where I am as an artist,” he said. “They prove exploration of what I am driven to or what I find attractive. Also, they are spontaneous. I find that there is a beauty of creating something in the moment, where I just create what comes from the heart, soul, and spirit. Most of the process consists of seeing a subject as shapes, lines, values, and color relationships.”

Julio’s paintings and those of his fellow artists in the spring 2021 studio art capstone class are currently on view in the Don Lee Student Gallery, located in the Windgate Art and Design Building.
Students in the UAFS Art & Design program will find an even more immersive undergraduate experience thanks to the Windgate Foundation's generosity - working with world-renowned artists in residence, studying in a state of the art facility, and learning skills that will equip them to compete at the highest levels both professionally and academically.

We are so proud to announce a monumental $8 Million gift from the Windgate Foundation that will directly impact the lives of hundreds of students across the UAFS campus and will broaden the reach of our UAFS Art & Design initiatives throughout our community.

The benefit to our students through the expansion of programs, resident artists, and comprehensive scholarships is profound, and we could not be more thankful for the generosity of our partners at the Windgate Foundation.

As the semester comes to a close, a group of UAFS students came together to create this video showing their fellow lions just what it means to be a member of the UAFS family.

As UAFS Art & Design senior Heli Mistry said in closing - Lions are the only cats who live in groups. Our Lion Pride is special. Our pride is unique, and it makes every lion stronger. Near or far, we are Lions together.

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Alumni has an amazing new mural on the side of their building at Grand and Waldron avenues!

UAFS Art & Design Professor Bryan Alexis, who designed the mural, wrote this artist’s statement for the piece:

The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith has seen many transitions over the years, from Fort Smith Junior College to WestArk, and from WestArk to the UAFS we know and love today. There were also transitions from a two year community college to a four year nationally competitive, regional university, and from a bachelor degree granting university to one that is now offering several master degrees as well. The campus itself has continually transitioned in bigger and more beautiful ways as well.

One thing that remains consistent beside the dedication to excellence in education is the UAFS Alumni Association. The UAFS Alumni Association is the unifying point through every transition. Another strong strand of continuity has been Numa, the lion, who, for almost 100 years, has been inspiring our students and alumni to take on all of the positive characteristics associated with such a powerful symbol.

This mural sends a message to those students and alumni to ever advance. To keep moving forward through ever transitioning life. The lion image is imposing, in the center, with transitioning colors surrounding. He is regal and thoughtful, powerful yet contemplative. Integrated around the lion is the charge: Forward, Lions! Forward is presented in DIN Condensed typeface while the word Lions is hand written, marrying analytics, science and liberal arts.

Surrounding the lion and typography is an explosion of color. This represents the transition of the university through the years as well as transition of the student from undergrad to alum. The color is broken into facets that symbolize the many paths forward. This mural stands to remind the students, alumni and Fort Smith community that our students, past, present, and future, carry the power of the lion into every transition of life. If they have ever been a part of the transformative life on this campus, at any point, they will forever be a lion.
New school year, same lifesaving mission! Join us for the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Blood Drive on Tuesday, September 3rd and Wednesday, September 4th in the Smith-Pendergraft Center!
