UAFS GRAPHIC DESIGN SENIOR THESIS PRESENTATIONS
Cards and clamshells! UAFS Art and Design faculty flexing a bit. 💪
Come see our Graphic Design Seniors present their thesis work, this Thursday, December 8 at 6 pm. The presentations will be streamed live here on Facebook starting at 6:30 pm. Following the presentation will be a reception and viewing of their projects in the Don Lee Student Gallery on the second floor of the Windgate Art & Design Building!
The Graphic Design class flexed their creative muscles with these banned book cover designs. Each student was given an identical paper bag filled with odds and ends, and a book title. Then they were tasked to put together a cover for the book to be photographed. Students were only allowed a knife and glue while using potentially everything in the paper bag (including the bag itself) for the design. They were not allowed to manipulate anything in Adobe Photoshop beyond color correction. We are very proud of the results.
Renowned commercial illustrator and graphic artist Alex Williamson from the UK has spent the last four weeks as an artist-in-residence for the Department of Art & Design at UAFS. Working with local museums and collections, he’s been exploring archival materials and uncovering a treasure trove of found imagery that frequently shifts from the weird and/or disturbing to the wonderful.
Through collage and use of the “visual essay,” Williamson’s residency project weaves together thoughts and fragments from the past and present, navigating intersections of history, geography, and politics while exploring the making and remaking of memory, myths, and cultural legacy through Fort Smith’s collections and archives.
Join us for a one-night-only installation of this groundbreaking project in the Cooler Room at the Bakery District, Saturday December 10, 6pm – 9pm!
Winter has arrived in the design studios.
We are still looking for student artists! If you are (or know) a young artist, please reach out! Art teachers, if you have students that would like to participate, please send us a headcount! We're hoping to have pieces dropped off at the gallery the week after Thanksgiving so we can get everything set up.
Thanks so much to our awesome alumnae Jessi Medeiros! What a great presentation to students today!
Another Forge Ahead event in the books. Much thanks to our student design team: and whose dedication and professionalism will take them far. Also thanks to all of the student volunteers, and not least our fearless leader Katie Waugh, as well as Colin , Peter, Ernest, Jay, , Matt B. , Sophia, and all other UAFS faculty and adjuncts that gave up their morning and other days getting ready for this event!

In support of the visual arts, more than $8.8 million will allow UAFS to expand the Windgate Art and Design building, enabling a more immersive public experience of the space and holistic fine arts studios for students and faculty.
“This gift will meaningfully augment every aspect of our department: the ways we educate students in each of our degree programs, the scope of our exhibitions and art collections, and the services and programming we can offer to the River Valley region and to broader art communities,” said Waugh. “This will shape not only how we address our current needs, but will also substantially inform our trajectory going forward.”
“I feel exceptionally grateful, respectfully humble, and ready to get to work,” she said. “It is such a rare, special opportunity to work towards a project that is this transformational, that will have this much impact on each individual student’s education in art and design.
Beginning in 2023, UAFS Art and Design will begin a physical expansion of the Windgate Building, as well as an expansion of curricular offerings through both new courses and broadened existing courses, including book arts, 3D-design, art history, graphic design, gallery and collections, museum preparator training, sculpture, ceramics, and digital fabrication.

The Motion Design class at the UAFS Department of Art just finished another project! Logo Animation. Students researched company brands to create moving identity pieces. Check it out!
The Motion Design class is at it again. This time with real life doodles. They are working on learning how to track and mask.
The Motion Design students at UAFS are up and running. Here's a short exercise where they become familiar with the 12 principles of animation and a little bit of storytelling. The goal was to write a 10-20 second story about a round object and animate it using Adobe After Effects. Stay tuned throughout the semester for more fun projects!
