Gatch described (the) of grinding as a speeding up of nature's process of erosion: "they have a marvelous stone wheel about twelve feet in diameter. They just lay the stone on the wheel, and a special kind of cutting sand and water flows underneath. Actually, the stone is eroded rather than ground. It stands there all daylong and wears away. Sometimes the stone becomes so sheer it BENDS when you pick it up"
