Two catches that happened, but shouldn’t have (or, when luck is on your side): A big Miami king on 40lb fluorocarbon leader, and a Bahamas wahoo that narrowly missed biting through a 150lb fluorocarbon leader.

This swordfish seemed to enjoy their little northwest portion of the Gulf of Mexico. While our spaghetti tags do not provide us with the real-time data to prove this swordfish remained in this spot for 1402 consecutive days, we also cannot prove it did not.
With an estimated 26 nautical miles of separation between the initial catch by angler Christina Thompson and captain Jeffrey Wilson aboard the vessel Titan Up and the recapture by angler Richard Allen and captain Clayton Meis on the boat Mad Props, this could just be the case of a homebody swordfish enjoying the comforts of their warm-watered hometown.
At an estimated 30 inches and 15 lbs during the tagging, this swordfish was estimated to be more than 150 lbs at recapture. It’s that home cooking!

I spent this afternoon at the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida Keys. Chris Rothwell, their Lead Meteorologist, explained some of the lesser-known facts involved in determining the predictions of sea heights in marine forecasts, and then some! You’ll hear some of his revelations during one of our upcoming “World of Saltwater Fishing” episodes in early 2023.

PHOTO DUMP from an awesome trip last week as the crew from Half Past First Cast returned to kick off our season here at Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge!
Although the weather here was a bit wet the crew caught 14 different species! The Yellowfin Tunas were crushing Yo-Zuri America. Inc. poppers and swimbaits boatside...biggest one went 120 , Sailfish were caught on live baits on spinning rods, Dorados were caught on logs we found floating offshore. Inshore the fishing was even better as these guys checked off all their species like Roosterfish, Almaco Jack, Blue Trevally, Mullet Snapper, Cubera Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Jack Crevalle, Rock Snapper, and more!
Thanks so much to Pete and Hanna from Half Past First Cast for their contiuned support of the lodge!!!
Enjoy all the pics!!!

Three days before Ol’ St. Nick made his global trek in 2008, angler Nick Burke, captain Ross McCubbin, and first mate Jeff Oldaker departed from the Australian coast. One can only assume they were scrambling for that perfect gift idea for The Billfish Foundation.
Let it be known that they nailed it. Tried and true, a brand-new tag on a black marlin is always the perfect gift for us. Just over six months later and more than a thousand nautical miles north, that same black marlin was successfully recaptured in the Milne Bay Province, with an estimated 63 inches of length.
