Speaking of Licking, let’s throw out some Week in Rock for ya!!!
This Week in Rock….1974
February 18, KISS Release Their Debut Album
This week in rock history marks a defining moment: on February 18, 1974, Kiss released their self-titled debut album, Kiss, on Casablanca Records.
At the time, the New York City quartet—Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss—were virtually unknown outside the Northeast club circuit. But what they lacked in radio presence, they made up for in ambition and spectacle.
• The album was recorded in just a few weeks in late 1973.
• Initial sales were modest; it did not immediately crack the Top 40.
• “Strutter,” “Cold Gin,” and “Deuce” would later become staples of their live shows.
• Casablanca Records was financially fragile at the time—if Kiss had failed, the label itself might not have survived.
Ironically, the record that launched one of the biggest brands in rock history was not an instant smash. Kiss didn’t explode nationally until their 1975 live album Alive! captured the raw power that studio recordings couldn’t fully contain.
