Willkommen zum Fischer am Freitagen

The settlement by the Fischer brothers eventually led to the establishment of a general store that gave the community the name Fischer’s Store. Hermann Fischer farmed, ranched, and then decided to use his formal training to open a mercantile business in 1866. Fischer’s Store offered a variety of ranching and farming supplies to accommodate the growing agricultural population of the area. A US Post Office was added in 1876. The original application for the post office was for the name Fischerdale on March 30, 1875. The US Postal Department declined this application. The application was then approved for the name of Fischer’s Store on March 17, 1876, hence giving the community the name Fischer’s Store, TX. To be continued…

Willkommen zum Fischer am Freitagen

The open range still existed in the 1860’s. Neighbors worked together to round up drifting cattle into herds to move to Kansas for market. The average herd was about 2500 head and was driven by a group of neighbors or a trail drive group. A drive like this would cost about $1500 (about $60,000 in today’s market) and would take about 3 months to complete. Most local ranchers sold their cattle to buyers going to Kansas. Stampedes, rustlers, Indians and trail loss made it difficult for a rancher to make a good profit. Ranching would undergo changes from 1865-1870’s as it did all over Texas. The days of free range disappeared as land became fenced. A man named George Kendall of Kendall Valley (6 miles from New Braunfels) introduced Merino Sheep to the region. The Fischer Brothers and other ranchers began to raise these sheep in addition to their cattle. At this same time, Herman Fischer began a general store and the area (unnamed up until this point) became known as Fischer’s Store and eventually just Fischer. Herman Fischer would become a successful mercantile business man and Otto Fischer would become a successful rancher. To be continued….

Willkommen zum Fischer am Freitagen:
In 1853, Herman and Otto Fischer arrived in the area, being some of the first pioneer settlers. Their survey/land claim was known as JF Johnson 123 and was located in the northwestern area of Comal County. Due to the difficulty of clearing land for farming in the Hill Country, the Fischer brothers started their cattle business; however, raising cattle was not easy either. This was a time of open range (no fences) and the cattle roamed from the Pedernales River to the San Antonio River. Harsh weather, rustlers, Indians and wolves all contributed to cattle loss. During the Civil War, the Fischers and other cattlemen had to have a pass from the county provost Marshall to cross adjacent county lines to retrieve lost or roaming cattle. From the late 1850’s through the end of the Civil War, the community would grow with people seeking land for agricultural purposes. This would bring changes to the surrounding area. To be continued….

Willkommen zum Fischer am Freitagen (Welcome to Fischer on Fridays)
Quite often we have visitors that will stop by the bowling alley and ask - “what is this place, what is the Fischer Agriculture Society, what is nine pin bowling, etc?”. To answer these questions and more, we will begin a weekly post diving into the history, ancestors, and legacy of Fischer Agriculture Society. Imagine a time where there is no phones, tv, internet, social media (gasp!), cars or planes. Travel is limited to horseback and by foot. Communication is by letters or word of mouth (actually talking face to face). Because of this, the area for agriculture business, social gatherings and daily conversations was very limited in size, especially in comparison to today’s standards. In 1875, a social, but cooperative organization, the Agricultural Society of Fischer, was formed. It was for the benefit of the farmers and ranchers of the area. The society addressed the agricultural endeavors of their members such as sharing farming and ranching knowledge, negotiating feed prices, and helping at harvest time. It also provided a means for the members’ families to enjoy a social life and the younger people a chance to meet somewhere other than school. To be continued…..
