Itโs not unusual for extraordinary events to occur at Traditional Art Today! Weโre unique and encourage visitors to our shop to be inspired and express their creativity! Imagine our delight when this trio of shoppers broke into a German version of Silent Night! Pretty awesome when you consider one of them had never met the others until that moment. #becreative #ferdinandindiana #visitduboiscounty
Tatting Slideshow
A traditional needlework art, our class in tatting was taught by Debbie Bruggeman.
Weaving Rugs
Here is a quick video clip of Bruce showing a student how to get started weaving. She picked some of the cut-off selvedges that Bruce brought along for the students to weave with. The selvedges work up into a fluffy, shaggy rug.
Introduction to Sewing
Deb Souders, who has a long list of sewing experiences to her credit, brought an Introduction to Sewing class to our 9th Street Studio. Five students participated in making tablerunners, and even though some were definitely not beginners, all agreed that they learned a lot from the class. Watch for Deb as she returns with more classes in the future!
Fundamentals of Photography with Jeff Wagner
Sunday, 20 January 2019, Jeff Wagner gave a class on the fundamentals of photography. A good number of enthusiasts - and those just wishing to improve their photo skills - attended. Even though photography has transitioned from film to digital over the years, the core principles remain the same to capture a quality picture. Thank you, Jeff, for sharing your knowledge!
Crazy Quilt Embroidery
On November 3rd, Jane Potter taught a class in Crazy Quilt Embroidery to nine students at our 9th Street Studio. Christmas stockings were pieced in the crazy quilt technique by Patti Schroeder using fancy fabrics as would have been done "way back in the day" (late 1800's). Students learned several embroidery stitches during the class and will continue to further embellish the stockings at home. We know Santa will be impressed with these stockings hanging on the mantel!
Sabrina Verkamp, Calligrapher
We had the pleasure of hosting a special event with calligraphy artist Sabrina Verkamp today. She let us peek over her shoulder while she personalized some of her beautiful hand-painted Christmas ornaments, and we thought you might like to watch, too. If you didn't have a chance to come see her demonstration, you can still pick up some of her ornaments at our 9th Street Studio. Calligraphy is a time-honored traditional art. When you see Sabrina's work, we think you'll agree that she is wonderfully talented.

Chicken Scratch Embroidery Class
On Saturday, July 7th, eight people joined instructor Bev Pleiss for a class on "Chicken Scratch" embroidery. One of the participants celebrated her eighth birthday on this day! Bev shared some basic stitches with the class, along with examples of how these could be combined for complex patterns like the "lace" pattern on a quilt top her mother embroidered. Everyone got a good start on their projects in the two-hour class - most finished in the next few days. A fun and productive group!

Day 2 of Our Grand Opening: Traditional Crafts Demonstrations
What a great time we had today, making new friends and visiting with old friends. The craftspeople who brought their work to demonstrate were so knowlegeable and happy to explain their work. Some of them have work to sell in our shop; some will be teaching classes in the months to come. We enjoyed the beautiful, old-fashioned music by Ray Majors throughout the afternoon. And everyone got to pet Prissy, Becky's kid-friendly alpaca! Please join us tomorrow (Sunday) from 10-3, when we will be serving coffee and home-baked muffins to add to your shopping enjoyment.
