The answer you’re looking for is hiding in plain sight. You just have to try enough things and do enough reps to see what feels best. What fits your style and process. Sitting around thinking about it usually won’t cut it. You have to put the time and effort in to get clarity.

This is a fun challenge for improving your work over time. Start with small drawings or paintings and a longer time at first. When you get more comfortable, decrease the timer limit enough to where you feel some pressure when creating. Don’t worry about finishing the piece. It’s not about that. It’s about helping you realize what’s most important in your piece. Everything else just supports that one idea.

The easiest route always seems tempting but the journey and end result never leave you satisfied. You also will learn less and grow less.

I struggled with perfectionism a lot when I first started painting 15 years ago. It took me a while to overcome it and it’s not an easy thing to do. But something that helped me was to just do more paintings. The more reps I did, the less I treated each piece so carefully. If it failed, I knew I’d just try again and do another one. It helped to overcome one aspect of perfectionism.

When do something enough, eventually luck will be on your side. Just enjoy the process and have fun along the way.

Not all art is made to be sold. And that’s a beautiful thing.

Be aware of your input vs your output. How much you consume vs how much you create. Both are necessary for improvement but sometimes it’s easy to get too much input and your output will suffer.

I knew this may not be the most interesting painting when I was painting it on location. But I wanted to document the changes of the lake and water levels of Folsom Lake, CA. It was morning and the light was so bright reflecting off the surface of the water. It almost looks like I painted snow or something. But all that you can see of the trees is the very tops of them, sticking out of the water. I had to paint them from much farther away due to the water level. The 2nd painting is just to show what the trees normally look like when the water level is lower.

Sketchbook painting in Malaysia. View from Hotel Perkasa in the evening. Quite a challenging view but fun to paint. That’s what it’s all about for me anyway.
