As Far As I Could Follow
Digital painting, 2026
I painted this on my iPad while sitting in the hospital with my mother-in-law during the last days of her life.
At the time, I wasn’t trying to make a painting about grief or death. I was just making. Giving my hands somewhere to put what I didn’t have words for yet.
Looking at it now, I think my hands knew before I did.
There are places the people we love eventually have to go without us.
And maybe one of the greatest acts of love we can offer is to go with them as far as we can.
To sit beside them.
To hold their hand.
To talk to them.
To remind them who has been there and how deeply they are loved.
To stay.
And then, when we reach the place where we can no longer follow, to trust that our love has carried them as far as it possibly could.
I would have followed you farther if I could.
But I went with you as far as I could. ❤️
As Far As I Could Follow.
