Celebrate Pride by celebrating Ali!

You’ve seen Ali’s handiwork most recently in set decorating (And Then There Were None) and Costume design (Lovers and Executioners)

1) Tell us (briefly) about you and your involvement with PPF

I have been an interior designer for over 20yrs, I enjoy the arts, theater and travel. I joined Providence players over a decade ago and have had the opportunity to design and construct sets, costume a play and assist on dozens of plays.

2) Tell us what PRIDE means to you

Pride is about equality for all aspect of our lives, it is also is about a community and place where we can me be ourselves without prejudice.

3) How do you think the theater community at large can best support our LGBTQIA+ community?

Celebrate Pride by celebrating the dynamic duo of Mike & Clark!

1) Tell us (briefly) about you and your involvement with PPF
Mike first got involved with PPF as an actor in 2016 when he was cast in “Red Herring.” His other PPF roles have been in “Amadeus,” “The Front Page,” and “Leaving Iowa.” He had his first assistant set decorator credit (ever) on “Lovers and Executioners.” Clark’s first PPF experience was on the set build for “Amadeus,” and he’s helped out on a number of other set builds—and strikes—since then. Clark has also been a box office volunteer, and both he and Mike have been ushers.

2) Tell us what PRIDE means to you
Pride to us has always been a time to celebrate the recognition of our full personhood, and of our right to be ourselves, both individually and as a couple. That “right” was always ours, really, even before all the legal and political gains that have taken place over the past decades. But to be able to proclaim our full personhood publicly—proudly—along with scores of our brothers and sisters and an ever-growing number of friends and allies, is a tremendous blessing.

3) How do you think the theater community at large can best support our LGBTQIA+ community?
Keep the stage an open place for everyone, no matter where they are coming from in their lives and experiences. Let it be neutral ground. And by neutral we don’t not mean fallow… just a safe space for all the many, diverse stories there are to tell…and for all who labor to tell them.

Celebrate Pride by Celebrating Jason!🌈

1) I first became involved with PPF through my husband Mario, who was appearing in a PPF show (Rehearsal for Murder) when we first met. He introduced me to PPF and to the DC theatre community as a whole. From there, I became a regular supporter of PPF and have volunteered in a number of different capacities on productions over the years.
2) PRIDE is being able to live your truth out loud without shame or judgment. LGBTQ+ people are so often told throughout their lives that who they are is wrong, or bad, or sinful, or worse. PRIDE is the courage to rise above all of that and declare to yourself and to everyone else that you are a person worthy of love, and deserving of all the same rights as everyone else.
3) The theatre community is one of the few places that has consistently been a safe place for LGBTQ+ people. I think that there is a baseline of acceptance for LGBTQ+ people embedded in the local theatre community which is comforting. I would love to see theaters take that to the next level though and turn acceptance into active support. LGBTQ+ people instinctively seek out safe spaces and are fiercely loyal to organizations that demonstrate support for our community. Theatres can make a huge impact and reap huge benefits by actively signaling that they are welcoming spaces.

Celebrate Pride by celebrating Mario Font!

Mario was last seen on stage with Providence Players in Neil Simon's California Suite where he played quite the rage filled tennis player. If you know Mario, you know rage filled is quite the stretch for him! 🌈❤😍

1) I first became involved with PPF in 2009 and have been performing in their productions since then. Shortly after joining PPF Imet Jason and introduced him to the PPF experience. I’m also the PPF representative to the Washington Area Theater Community Honors (WATCH) and the Secretary of the WATCH Board.
2) Pride is both an external and internal acknowledgment of who I am, no judgements. I look forward to the day when Pride isn’t an automatic event or celebration, but rather a full acceptance by society 24/7.
3) Theater has always been a haven and a home for LGBTQIA+. “We” in the Community know that and are grateful. Theater should of course first and foremost be a celebration of art but it can also serve as a means to tell our stories - of triumph, of sadness and anger, and above all, to show “us” as no different from anyone else. Featuring both LGBTQIA+ storylines and LGBTQIA+ actors in any and all roles is a powerful tool to move us along to full equality.

Celebrate Pride with us this month by celebrating some of our proud volunteers! 🌈🌈🌈

First up is Lindsey June, most recently seen on stage in our productions of Bobby Gould in Hell and Leaving Iowa.

1. I am a native Northern Virginian who works full time in the entertainment industry, which I'm so lucky and thankful for since I went to school for it (Go Hokies!) and still love to do theatre in my free time. In the past, I've acted in a few Providence Players shows and am now dabbling in props as well and always looking to lend a helping creative hand!
2. To me, Pride means a celebration of life, a worldwide and communitywide encouragement to be uniquely and authentically YOU, not just in the month of June but 365 days of the year. It also means remembering and commemorating those that have sacrificed their lives both physically and emotionally for those who are LGBTQIA+ and allies to live comfortably, safely, and fight for love, especially those who are typically silenced like our trans, nonbinary, fluid and bisexual/pansexual leaders and siblings. Pride started as a riot, so let's keep that legacy going.
3. The theatre community at large can do a LOT for the LGBTQIA+ community, whether they're a member of the "club" or not! There are so many amazing pieces out there that highlight q***r stories that should get showcased beyond the go-to's of Angels in America, Rent, Hedwig, etc. and those that are new works from local artists (hit me up for recommendations)! I would encourage theaters to create councils or committees that have representation from all underrepresented groups to bring forth art from those communities (as LGBTQIA+ stories and media often crossover with other communities), and use those folks in your circles as resources to vet ideas, topics, portrayals, and so forth. Listen and perform authentically.

Happy Pride Month!!!

Drink. Breathe. Sigh." ~ Jess
