Keeping your piercing clean is one of the most important parts of healing. A fresh piercing is an open wound, giving it consistent care helps your body heal properly and keeps irritation to a minimum.
Clean your piercing two times a day using sterile saline solution and always wash your hands before touching the area. Once cleaned, carefully pat it dry with clean paper towel. Cloth towels are best avoided as they can carry bacteria and easily snag on jewellery. Harsh products like alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or antibacterial creams should never be used as they damage healing skin and slow the process down.
Reducing irritation is just as important as cleaning. Try not to touch your piercing unless you’re cleaning it and avoid twisting or spinning the jewellery. Sleeping on the piercing or putting pressure on it can cause swelling and discomfort, so be mindful where you can. It’s also best to avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, lakes or the sea during early healing and keep makeup, skincare and hair products well away from the area.
Some redness, swelling, tenderness and a clear or whitish discharge are completely normal in the early stages of healing. Times for healing vary depending on the piercing so patience really is key. Rushing jewellery changes or skipping aftercare often leads to unnecessary problems.
