The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts was created in 1979 by Mayor Fredrick Silverthorne and his Council to encourage, to promote and to provide opportunity for artistic expression within the City. The Commission is working to continue the enrichment of the community through funding, information, encouragement, exhibits, education, and co-ordination. Funding - grants to arts organizations in

the City of Fairfax. Information—marketing and publicity of upcoming arts events. Encouragement - funding to aid and assist emerging arts groups. Exhibits - provide opportunities for exhibition of works of art. Education - support programs designed to increase understanding and appreciation of the arts in City schools. Coordination - working with area arts organizations to open new avenues and venues for the arts in the city.

Last night members of the Commission on the Arts celebrated the finalists and winners of the 2024 Election Sticker Contest with the City of Fairfax Electoral Board. The winning design will be featured on Election stickers for the 2024 Election!

If you want to see all of the designs, they will be displayed at Sherwood from Friday through Election day!

Did you know that the Commission on the Arts has a grant program?!?!

The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts’ grant program provides project grants to organizations in the City. The projects must provide any or all of the following…
• Educational programs that increase understanding and appreciation of the arts
• Access to high-quality art for the citizens of Fairfax
• Opportunities for artists to develop skills and demonstrate their abilities
• Support of emerging art organizations and activities

The Commission on the Arts Grant program is funded through a grant from City of Fairfax Government and the Virginia Commission for the Arts Creative Communities Partnership Grant.

Deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, September 13 to apply! You can find more information at the below website!

The Office of Elections and The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts are excited to announce that 6 finalists have been selected for the 2024 Election Sticker Contest.

The public can now vote for their favorite design! You have until May 28 to select your favorite sticker design.

The two winning designs will be used as the “I Voted” and “Future Voter” stickers for the November 2024 Presidential Election.

What a lovely evening celebrating several of our City’s wonderful people and businesses! Tom Ross won the John Mason Award and Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburger won the Arts Achievement Award. Both have been huge supporters of the arts for many years.

We also awarded our Language Arts 123 writing competition winners with cash prizes for their wonderful literary works submitted. Thank you to all who came out last night to support the Arts in this wonderful City of ours!

The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts is delighted to announce this year's winners of its Language Arts 123 Competition.

Adult Category

First Place, Janet Jaworski, for her short story "The Flood."
Runner-up, Aziza Bayou, for her short story "Listening to Forgiveness".

High School Category

First Place, Genevieve Greer, for her short story "What's Done is Done."
Runner-up, Ian Jang, for his short story "The Crane."

Middle School Category

First Place, Cameron Mangal, for the essay "Forgiveness."
Runner-up, Emma Puschman, for her short story "The Power of Forgiveness Changes Lives."
