This was a first! Creating an artist documentary takes time, planning and a lot of patience. I learned a lot about the film and editing process while working with Bodhi Bryan-Roig . He created a series of video teasers sharing my art and process. Last weekend we previewed the initial video documentary. Stay tuned for the Final Cut soon! So impressed with Bodhi’s artistic vision and professionalism!

One of my most favorite things about having a solo show is having my family come together and show their support. I returned to being a full time creative when my oldest was a becoming a teen and it is what helped me find balance in my every day life. But living as an artist also helped me to rediscover myself after the years of pregnancy, potty training and prepubescent children. I am so proud of my now, adult kids and happy to know that they understand what it entails to live an artist life and how it has positively affected how I parent. Of course, the other parent involved, my husband Gregg, is also very much a part of the equation. Not only is he an incredibly supportive partner, but he is also the artisan behind making my wooden cradle boards and frames. You could say that he is literally the backbone and support that is very much needed in order for me to continue as an artist. More reception pics to come but a giant thank you to all of you who came out in the heat to Lake Anne Plaza’s Reston Art Gallery. I loved seeing you all! Thank you to my art collectors for finding forever homes for my work! And thank you to my fellow artists and gallery mates who helped at the reception! Cheers to art receptions where we can celebrate creativity and joyful moments! .

Today’s the day! Please join us Reston Art Gallery for our artist reception! This show is extra special since I am introducing two amazingly talented artists to my team. annie przypyszny (Annie Przypyszny, writer, editor and poet) who has written a stunning art review and Bodhi Bryan-Roig (Bodhi Bryan-Roig, film and video artist/editor and photographer) who has captured my artistic process and woven many hours of film into a beautiful documentary. This show is dedicated to the creative process and those who inspire. I have dedicated the work to my parents, who lived a creative lifestyle and shared those values with their children. Join me today for a toast and some nosh!

“Garden Musings,” 40”x48”
Flower gardens will never cease to amaze me. Especially when one grows up in the Midwest, where the soil is frozen for almost 9 months of the year! I find endless inspiration in the diversity of plants and their varied blossoms. The complex shapes contrasting with simple blooms, the layers of bright and bold overlapping neutrals. People often put chairs in their gardens yet never seem to sit in them. Instead, the chair watches over the blooms as a reminder to take time to enjoy the magic.

Reposting this video since it’s from early winter when I was just getting started on my show. The next photo is taken on install day by Bodhi Bryan-Roig -love how he captured me tired, exhausted but quite pleased with the overall look of the show. It was a hot day at the gallery and I was schvitzing beyond! Show is open on weekends Reston Art Gallery and we are having our Meet the Artist Reception this Sunday, 2-4pm. We will have fans and cool refreshments! Looking forward to seeing you!

A nod to Matisse and his painting:

“Egyptian Curtain” The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC
Love the large curtain designs contrasted with the smaller, leafy shapes.
And the lemons! My piece uses hand painted papers and cardboard with etchings into the wooden cradle board.

Part of my current show:

Just hung my August solo show Reston Art Gallery Lake Anne Plaza

This show is an homage to my childhood in Iowa City. I was lucky to grow up in the heartland, surrounded by fields filled with cattle and corn! We grew sunflowers that towered over our heads and tended to flower and vegetable gardens. There were so many houseplants and fresh cut flowers housed in my mom’s home made pottery. I continue to use her functional pottery and have also found that they brought me inspiration during the creation of this show. The gallery is filled with flowers and vases, colors and textures. These pieces need to be seen in person to fully appreciate the layers. If you come this weekend, I will give you a personal tour!

I will be gallery sitting this Saturday if you would like to stop by between 10am and 5pm.

And the Reston Farmer’s Market at Lake Anne will be up and running from 8:00am until noon.

The Reston Art Gallery is just a short stroll down the plaza, waterside.
Looking forward to seeing you!
