Tropical Events

Tropical Events Tropical is a legendary West Coast event series that recently celebrated 25 years in business. In 2024 Tropical hosted 6 events - 3 in Oregon and 3 in California!. In 2024 Tropical works more as a collaborative force, bringing people together for more dynamic and successful results.

🌴 Tropical was founded in 1998 by Ben Annand with a vision to improve the image of electronic music events by creating a high-quality production that also raises money and awareness for the less-fortunate. There have been over 90 Tropical events in California, Washington, Hawaii, and Oregon since, over which time the nonprofit party has raised over $33,000 for charitable causes.

Tropical start

ed in a warehouse on October 9, 1998, and moved around to different warehouses in its first 5 years. In 2004 things got experimental with the first-ever Tropical Boat Party, and other formats were later added including Tropical Campout (2007), Tropical Beach Party (2009), and Tropical Oasis Retreat (2011).

Tropical Oasis Retreat happened 6 times in Southern California before jumping to a truly Tropical desination - Hawaii - in January 2018 (Tropical Oasis Retreat Kau'ai). Tropical followed in 2019 with a 400-person extravaganza right on the beach on Maui. After fortuitously planning 2020 off after NYE in California, Tropical returned to Hawaii December 2021 for it's 3rd Hawaiian Island - Tropical Oasis Retreat Big Island. Stay tuned if we make it 4!

After 25 years, 2024 is a year of change for Tropical. Mostly we plan to work as a collaborative force, bringing people together for more dynamic and successful results.

Sept 27-29, 2024 Tropical celebrates 26 years in Frazier Park, CA at a stunning and modern Girl Scout camp in. their off-season. Up to 6 other collaborators will be pulled in to host different cabin and tent villages in this gorgeous spot with over 200 beds, heated swimming pool and 5400 foot elevation just over an hour from Los Angeles.

I will make the full 3+ hour Journey available in a few weeks on Dayfunk's SoundCloud - but for now I wanted to put the peak part of my set up on my own SoundCloud - because it's time for something fresh there :)

This is my favorite party I've played this year due to the high energy, diverse crowd of several hundred dancers that turned out on a beautiful day in Minneapolis

If you are in MSP be sure and check out this awesome event which takes place at Eat Street crossing, generally on the 3rd Sunday of the month - next up with Lori Branch on May 17th.

Minneapolis is a special city and within that, Dayfunkers are a special group of people that really get down. Huge thanks to Nick and Liz for bringing me out & allowing me the extended 3 hour set.

Having a long set definitely allowed me to take this crowd on a journey - I chose my vocals carefully to honor a city that has put up such a beautiful resistance.

Tropical remembers and honors DJ Dan's constant presence and positive influence on electronic music over the entire time we have been in operations, and several years prior. 

We are lucky to have had Dan play for us 4 times, including our most recent 2 events, last month's Tropical in LA, and last September's 27-Year Anniversary Retreat

This set from September 2025 is, as far as we know, the last-released live DJ Dan set, and it exemplifies his style very well, mixed expertly, blurring genre lines to whip a small but spirited dance floor into a frenzy.

It is sad not to have Dan in our world anymore but we are thankful for the wide body of music and mixes he left, and touched by the outpouring of love we are reading everywhere about him.

He's a legend for all the right reasons - taken from us too soon, but not before making a tremendous impact on dance music and countless people worldwide. 

We will always have your music and memories, and we will always love you, DJ Dan! 🌺💜💚🩵❤️🌺

Fun times with Tropical in Downtown LA last Sunday :). We started inside before dawn and ended outside in the sunshine on a 71 degree winter day :)

In all we had about 150 people and raised $463 after costs to seed a new campout medical funding nonprofit.

first played alongside at our 18-year Anniversary Oasis Retreat near Lake Isabella in 2016. 

The next year he again joined , along with at the iconic Tropical Boat Party in Long Beach - which was the one and only Tropical Halloween Boat Party.  Then last year he headlined Tropical's 27-Year Hot Tub Oasis Retreat :)

What Dan hasn't played yet is a Tropical indoor jam... till now!  So get ready!

We could go on and one about Dan's contribution to the rave scene and its many splinters.  He's been a prolific producer, label manager and touring DJ since near the beginning.  Loose Caboose and That Zipper Track were tracks you heard multiple DJs play in the same night in the mod 90s.   He founded in 2001, which has hundreds of  releases since. 

Dan is still constantly touring, just back from 10 days in Florida for Love Burn then Berling right after - he truly never lets up!

One of the most technically skilled and fun Djs in house music, we couldn't be more thrilled to have Dan with us on 2-22

Steve Loria is an LA underground OG we've been following since the 90s. Back then Steve founded Bang the Drum LA to showcase his unique tribal house style, and was also co-resident with Doc Martin at Unlock the House. He's been one of the West Coast's most skilled and recognizable house DJs ever since.

Playing for Tropical is honestly long overdue. Better late than never though :)

We are stoked to bring Steve back from semi-retirement to our party, which continues from the 90s with core values focused on community, music, and dancing.
