September 14 – 10am to 4pm – “Paint the Fall Colors” with Cathy Goodale

We will paint Plein Air if possible. The study for the day is to paint your subject in bright sunlight and then in a different light like dull over-cast, threatening storm, dusk, fog? Think out of the box! When values are the same or nearly the same… connect them. Translate the visual world into SHAPES. Give the same authority to the shape of a light as you do the shape of an object. Eliminate an edge to form a new shape. Hard edges describe borders-abrupt turns- high contrast. Soft edges suggest indistinct borders- gentle curves- low contrast.

Art Center members $72 Non-Members $80

On September 14th we will meet in front of the Art Center in Estes Park for a fun paint throwing approach to starting a painting! Who says you need brushes???? Watercolor works best for this technique because it is so fluid. You need a full palette of color, a brush that hold a lot of water, several sheets of watercolor paper, masking tape, a large water container, masking fluid(optional), boards to tape watercolor paper down, pencil and brushes to complete the painting. Depending on the weather we may complete the paintings inside the Art Center. Sounds like a fun day!

Plein Air Painting in Layers
with Marie Massey

September 15, 2022
September 16, 2022

10am to 4:30pm – first day
9am to 5pm – second day

Art Center Members: $112 Non-Members: $125.00

Award-winning artist, Marie Massey, has been painting professionally for 20 years and teaching the “Painting in Layers” method adults working in oil and acrylic for 10 years. She’s an avid plein air painter and does 5 to 7 plein air painting events annually.
Come and plein air paint the astounding scenery just outside beautiful Estes Park at the McGregor Ranch, in the autumn of 2022, with Marie in this two day workshop. We’ll begin on Thursday morning, September 15 at 10am in the Art Center classroom with a demonstration of the Painting in Layers Method and Marie will explain the materials used and the steps necessary to paint outdoors using oil and/or acrylic paints. There will be a break for lunch and then the class will meet to paint at a location on the McGregor Ranch property from 1 to 4:30 pm. During the painting period, Marie will facilitate and coach students through their painting, giving individual instruction at each students’ easels along with critiques and helpful tips.
On Friday, September 16 we will again paint at McGregor Ranch, beginning at 9am. We will do one painting in the morning and one in the afternoon. Then, from 4 to 5 pm on Friday, Marie will provide a critique of all the student paintings.
During the painting process, students will learn how use the Painting in Layers method to quickly design and build a composition with depth through perspective, values and color. Finally they will fine-tune their work by pushing and pulling values, softening and sharpening edges and adding details.
Materials List: Provided (Students are to bring their own supplies… as many of the items listed on the materials list that is provided as possible.)
