ARTNAUTS 30TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION
PART 1: RHIZOME: ORIGINS
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Artnauts, the CU Art Museum, University of Colorado Boulder (CUAM), and the Arvada Center (AC) are co-organizing a two-part anniversary exhibition. The theme of the exhibitions is centered on the concept of a RHIZOME.

Curated by Trine Bumiller, Martha Russo, Tina Suszynski, and CU Art Museum Director, Hope Saska, Part 1: "Rhizome: Origins" is taking place this Fall at the CU Art Museum in Boulder, Colorado. "Rhizome: Origins" features the foundational history of the Artnauts and explores the origins of the group at CU Boulder. The exhibition will run concurrently with the "Artnauts: From the Archive" exhibition looking back on the groups 30 year history. "Artnauts: From the Archives" spans 18 years of works from our members, offering a look into our mission of using art as a tool for social change.

Characterized by spontaneous growth over an ever-expanding network of cells, the rhizome is an organism that generates multiple points of connection and departure. Undergoing constant evolution in the process of self-creation, the rhizome is also an analogy for Artnauts Collective, which “uses the visual arts as a tool for addressing global issues while connecting with artists from around the world.”

The Artnauts are pleased to announce: ARTNAUTS FROM THE ARCHIVE at CU Art Museum (CUAM)

"Artnauts: From the Archive" exhibition includes works drawn from the Artnauts Collective Archive, featuring 95 works from 27 exhibitions from 2001-2026. Exhibit gives a glimpse into how the Artnauts exhibit their works internationally. The Artnauts, formed in 1996, have had more than 220 artists in the collective, participating in over 256 exhibitions, in 27 countries on 5 continents. The Artnauts have worked at the intersection of critical consciousness and contemporary artistic practice to impact change for 30 years.

The traveling "Artnauts: From the Archive" exhibition will run concurrently with Artnauts' foundational history exhibition, "Rhizome: Origins", taking place this Fall at the CU Art Museum in Boulder, Colorado.

SOCIAL SCULPTURE is one of the Artnauts greatest traditions. Founder Dr George Rivera explains, "Our social sculpture actions are created with the intent to create social transformation that heals others as they deal with inhumanity that erodes our common well-being. All of us can create art about social transformation, but not all of us can create social sculptures (actions) that extend beyond the white cube to initiate discussion about the consequences of the inhumanity that exists and the importance of healing from that wound."

As part of the Artnauts 30th Anniversary Part 1 exhibition, "Rhizome: Origins", social sculpture "A Thousand Knots" by Pamela Beverly-Quigley, will be actioned.

Pamela writes, "'A Thousand Knots' is an interactive artwork that grows over time with participation, creating a shared experience of emotional release, connection, and renewal. A 53-foot-long “strand” (symbolizing an unwoven mandala) made from wool and textiles is handed to participants, thus connecting everyone together. Each person receives a piece of fabric or vintage lace, symbolizing the start of a new journey. They are then invited to reflect on a personal burden while holding the “strand” and untying a twine knot that resides on it, representing the release of emotional weight. Afterward, they tie their new fabric onto the cord, marking the intention for their new path. Over time, additional cords will be added culminating in the creation of a larger mandala, symbolizing the cyclical nature of personal and communal change."

Happy birthday to the iconic founder of the Artnauts, Dr. George Rivera! Dr. George Rivera In celebration we placed some of George’s stickers on the sign at the Eastern terminus of the famous Route 66 that begins in Chicago. Right in front of the Art Institute of Chicago and the school of the art Institute of Chicago we love sharing George’s social sculptures around the world. The rhizome is spreading! ❤️

ARTNAUTS STUDIO SUNDAY
This week, Artnaut Sandra Jean Ceas gives us a peak into her process with the work she is making for the Artnauts' "Rhizome: Outgrowths" exhibition at the Arvada Center taking place in the Fall of 2027. This exhibition is part two in the RHIZOME Artnauts 30th anniversary exhibitions. "Rhizome: Outgrowths" features the “outgrowths” of the Artnauts collective. "Rhizome: Outgrowths" reveals how ideas seeded by founding members have spread, morphed, and branched out. Works reflect activism, mutation, cross-cultural exchange, and new nodes of connection.

Come see what Artnaut member Trine Bumiller has been up to in the MFA program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. OPEN STUDIOS there are this Friday, July 24, 4-8 pm

Her studio is in the Maclean Center, 112 S. Michigan Avenue, #1713. There will be many other studios across campus open that day (see the last slide). Hope to see you there!
