Our Fall 2026 Concert is five weeks away!

Finding meeting places across forms & cultures through new, returning, & reimagined works this season; with choreography by Sadie Weinberg, Daunté Nabi Fyall, Lemoe Mata’itusi, and Lux Boreal/A Step Beyond.

This week, founding LITVAKdance company member Ashley Akhavan gives us insight into Sadie Weinberg’s “Ritual” which will be performed in our Fall Concert November 21 and 22 at TPHS Performing Arts Center.

Ritual is an aspiration towards the transcendent. Emotionally driven but sketched out through line and form, it is set to a hauntingly meditative piece by Ezio Bosso. Full of repetition, the piece takes work for the dancers to get through, they cannot simply fall into the dance, but must continue to drive the piece forward by sheer will and the willingness to work together. Like a ritual, the dancers are called to be part of something bigger than themselves while discovering moments to maintain their individuality along the way.

We are always asked about our company name so we thought we’d share the story behind the naming of LITVAKdance.

In selecting a company name Artistic Director, Sadie Weinberg, chose to reclaim her husbands’ lost family name. The LITVAK family immigrated to the United States in the late 1800’s from Eastern Europe. When they arrived the family changed their name from ‘Litvak’ to ‘Lane’ to assimilate into American society. For us, LITVAKdance symbols the reclaiming of our histories. We are from places that span the globe and we strive to acknowledge our heritage and rich diversity while also honoring who we are today. This is the bedrock of our company vision.
LITVAKdance is committed to growing the arts, particularly dance, in the NorthWest region of San Diego. This is our home; we live here, we teach here, we work here, we were educated here, and we want to give back to our communities through the stories we tell with our moving bodies.
