Here they come!

The monarch migration is about to begin.

Along the way, they depend on native flowering plants to rest and refuel. Planting native wildflowers and milkweed in your yard or community is one simple way to help these remarkable travelers complete their journey.

Here's to safe travels, little monarchs.

Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples!

Wetlands and water sources hold immense importance for Indigenous Peoples. Often part of their traditional territories, they sustain livelihoods, provide food and water, and support the wellbeing of communities but their significance goes far beyond livelihoods.

🍀Many wetlands are sacred places, deeply connected to cultural identity, traditions, knowledge and spiritual practices that have been passed down through generations.

🏞️Indigenous Peoples are also custodians of invaluable knowledge about wetlands and their sustainable use.

Recognizing their rights, knowledge and leadership is essential to ensuring these ecosystems are protected and wisely used.

All it takes is leaving a corner of your yard wild for the bugs and critters.

Tonight, somewhere between the tomatoes and the fence line, a sparkle will assemble itself.

That's the actual term — a group of fireflies is called a sparkle, and it might be the most honest collective noun in the English language. They're not flies at all, but beetles, running the most efficient light show on Earth: nearly 100% of the energy in that glow becomes light, almost none of it heat. A lightbulb should be so lucky.

Every blinking pattern you see is a conversation — each species flashes its own code, males signaling from the air, females answering from the grass.

August is their grand finale, so the show outside your window is worth the price of standing still for five minutes.

We need to do better. Despite the name of the page our planet does not have infinite resources. We consume far more than what we need.

Ethiopia has launched an ambitious nationwide campaign to plant 700 million trees in a single day, part of its broader Green Legacy Initiative, which aims to reach 50 billion trees by the end of 2026.

Since the program began in 2019, Ethiopia reports planting tens of billions of seedlings to combat deforestation, reduce soil erosion, improve water security, and restore degraded landscapes. If successful, the campaign would represent the largest tree-planting initiative ever undertaken by a single nation, supporting biodiversity while increasing long-term carbon storage.

In a major victory for Tribal Nations in Michigan, the state’s Supreme Court has overturned Enbridge's permit to build its proposed Line 5 oil tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac. Enbridge must now go back to the drawing board and re-apply for a permit.

"Today is a reminder that when people stand together with courage and conviction, change is possible," said Bay Mills Indian Community President Whitney Gravelle.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared the campaign, or helped spread the word. Because of your support, the Moon Camp property next to Jackie and Shadow’s habitat will now be permanently protected. What was once planned for development will remain open space for bald eagles and the many other species that depend on it. This is a reminder that when people come together, we really can make a difference. Thank you for helping protect Big Bear’s wildlife for generations to come. 🦅💚
