How a custom scent actually gets made, since a few of you have asked. 🕯️

It is not glamorous. It's a lot of small jars and a notebook.

You start with an idea — apple and bourbon — and then you find out immediately that apple alone smells like a candy, and bourbon alone smells like a hotel bar at 2am, and put together at the obvious ratio they smell like neither one on purpose.

So you adjust. Then you wait, because a candle has to cure — you can't judge it the day you pour it, you have to leave it alone for days and come back. Then you burn it. Then you change one thing and do the whole cycle again.

Italian bergamot went in because the apple needed lifting. Heliotrope went in on a hunch near the end, in a small amount, and it's the thing that makes the whole blend feel finished instead of assembled. 🍎

That's Apple Bourbon. It exists nowhere else because I made it up, and I'm genuinely pleased with how it landed.

A little transparency about what "hand poured in small batches" actually means. 🕯️

It means me. In Nebraska. Pouring them.

It means I melt the wax and I mix the fragrance and I set the wicks and I wait for them to cure, and then I wipe down every jar because glass shows every fingerprint and I am apparently the kind of person who cares about that.

It means 4 to 6 days before yours ships — not because anything is slow or disorganized, but because it isn't sitting in a warehouse. It doesn't exist yet. It gets made after you order it, which is a genuinely different thing from buying a candle off a shelf.

And it means when you open the box, that candle was poured for you specifically, by a person, roughly a week ago. 🎃

Hosting tip that costs $12: put a candle in the bathroom.

Not the kitchen — the kitchen is handling itself, and honestly you don't want a pumpkin candle arguing with a turkey. The bathroom. And the entryway if you've got one.

Because here's what people actually experience when they come to your house for Thanksgiving. They walk in. They hang up a coat. And at some point in the next two hours, every single guest will be alone in your bathroom for ninety seconds. That's the one room where each person is by themselves with nothing to do but notice things.

A small candle in there does more for how your house feels than anything else you'll fuss over that day.

Cozy Pumpkin in the 3 oz is $12 and is exactly right for this — creamy, warm, not overwhelming in a small room. Light it an hour before people arrive.

Let's address "he doesn't like candles." 🪵

He does. He likes candles fine. What he doesn't like is walking into his own living room and having it smell like a cupcake.

Because that's what's on offer, mostly. Vanilla frosting. Warm sugar cookie. Pumpkin pie with extra whipped topping. Fine candles, genuinely — I make several of them and I love them — but they all live at the dessert end, and if that's not your thing there's just... nothing. You opt out entirely and decide you're "not a candle person."

Boys of Fall is the other end. Cedarwood. White sandalwood. Musk. Tonka bean. Crisp air and fallen leaves over the top. It smells like a jacket that's been outside, and a fire that's been going a while. 🔥

I've had more than one person tell me this is the first candle their husband has asked them to re-buy. That's not nothing.

Orchard happy hour. That's the whole vibe. 🍎🥃

Picture the good version of an October evening. You've been outside. It was cold enough for a jacket but not cold enough to complain about. There were apples involved at some point. And now you're back inside, shoes off, and somebody's pouring something brown over one large ice cube.

That's what this smells like. Crisp apple and warm vanilla bourbon, with bergamot keeping it bright — the outdoors part and the indoors part, in the same jar. 🕯️

And here's the practical upside: it's not a dessert candle. It doesn't smell like pie or bakery or sugar. Which means it works in a living room, an office, a man's apartment, a space where you want it warm but not sweet. The First Cold Night

You know the night I mean. 🍂

Not the first cold day — days are ambiguous, days can be a fluke. I mean the first cold night. The one where you go to shut a window around 7pm and realize it's already dark out and the air coming in has an edge to it, and something in your chest goes oh.

That's when it turns. You close the window. You put a blanket on the couch, and it will not leave that couch again until April. You make something warm to drink you didn't even want, purely for the ritual of holding it.

And you light a candle. Not because the house needs to smell like anything. Because the house needs to feel like something, and a small flame in a dark room at 7pm does that faster than anything else in the house. 🕯️

A small trick I stand by: light it twenty minutes before anyone arrives. 🕯️

Not when they knock. Before. Twenty minutes, maybe thirty. Long enough that the scent has actually moved through the house and settled, instead of being a candle someone can see burning on the counter.

Because here's what happens. They come in, and before they've taken their coat off, something in their shoulders drops about an inch. They can't tell you why. They'll say "it smells so good in here," and what they actually mean is it feels good in here — and those two things are much closer together than we give them credit for.

Harvest Bakery is the one I'd pick for that. Cinnamon and clove, then buttercream and vanilla. It reads as somebody has been cooking and cares that you're here, which is exactly the impression you want and considerably easier than actually baking. 🍞

Slow Sunday mornings, before company, or any ordinary weeknight that could stand to feel a little more like a holiday.

Spooky season, but make it soft. 🎀🖤

A witch hat with a pink bow tied around it. Little hearts. A few sparkling stars. That's it — and somehow that's all it took.

Because there's a whole group of us who love October and have exactly zero interest in anything scary. We want the hat. We want the moon. We want the candles and the sparkle and a shirt that's cute. We do not want blood, gore, or a jump scare, thank you, we'll be over here with the bows. ✨

Bows have been having a moment for a while now and I don't think it's ending, because a bow makes anything look like somebody meant to do it. Including a witch hat.

Three sizes, three completely different jobs. 🕯️

3 oz — $12. The gift size and the try-it size. Rose gold screw-on lid, so it travels: hotel rooms, guest bedrooms, a desk at work, your bag. This is also the one to buy if you're not sure yet and don't want to commit.

8 oz — $26. The everyday one. Single wood wick, sits on a counter or a nightstand, gets lit on a Tuesday for no reason. This is the size most people end up repurchasing, which tells you something.

15 oz — $36. The whole-room one. Double wood wick, which means it melts edge to edge with no tunneling, throws scent through an open floor plan, and crackles twice as much. About 80 hours — that's most of a season from one jar.
