Aloha! Sorry for the very long narrative here. I just spent the most amazing 4 days taking a colored clay class from Dean McRaine in Kapa'a on the island of Kauai. We focused on two techniques, Mokume Gane and Nerikomi. We concluded by building a block of "canes" of various designs, which we are then able to wire off into thin slabs of colorful designs. Those slabs are then used to create beautiful pottery. That's the simplified version. 😉
I was certainly the most inexperienced in the class of others who have taken this class before, and so I am VERY grateful to my group partners, especially Jenn , for holding my hand and helping me get a good introduction to this technique, and making sense of a bombardment of information. I cannot wait to come home and incorporate this into my studio.
I also want to give a big shout out to my Airbnb. It was just a few blocks away from the studio, tucked away behind an adult erotic shop. 😜 But it was the most peaceful, boho, hippie enclave with cats everywhere. I could not have been in a better place. My Airbnb included an outdoor livingroom. It was basically a covered porch that has been screened in and furnished with beautiful living room furniture. I spent as much time out there as I could. Leaving today is really bittersweet! But I get to go to Kona now and see my friends who own .earth coffee farm! Mahalo!!
