The Guadalupe de los Mansos Mission in our sister city Juarez was the first church of the area. Still preserved, it was erected by the order of the Franciscans who began to Christianize the natives.

On December 8, 1659, Fray García de San Francisco founded the Mission on the Paso del Norte river. You can see the Fray Garcia small statue in the front of the church, which is the same larger one at Pioneer Plaza, across the street from the plaza theater in downtown El Paso.

I always like to see the details in the ceilings, such beautiful woodwork.

La Casa de Azucar (Sugar House) in El Paso, located at the corner of Leavell Street and Gateway South Boulevard, is a remarkable creation that was lovingly crafted by Rufino Loya Rivas and his wife over a period of 25 years, from 1973 to 1998. The structure began with a rounded brick archway and evolved to incorporate window treatments, flower pots, angels, and various other decorative features, making it a must-see attraction.

Have you been to Artist Ho Baron’s free public viewing of his Sculpture Garden?

It’s located at his residence at 2830 Aurora off Piedras Avenue.

The garden contains many of his unique, life-size bronze sculptures. They draw your eyes, soul and imagination.

During his time in Nigeria, he began creating faces out of mud and he would line them up on his windowsill. Now he has amazing sculptures with many faces.

Baron says, “Since all religions have their idols, including that idolatry of an invisible god, then my sculptures can also be considered religious idols or icons. I could have called my sculptures demons or sprits, but no, they are my superheroes, and I will call them gods.”

Stop by and check out his garden and see how many faces you see, you will be fascinated.

Here is some historical background regarding the crumbling old Downtown El Paso building that recently suffered a partial collapse. This building was originally a hotel known as Hotel Orizaba, constructed in 1884. It predates many other buildings in the area and is considered the oldest standing building in South El Paso.

Furthermore, Henry Ossian Flipper (1856-1940), a formerly enslaved individual, was the first African-American graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1877. Born into slavery in Thomasville, Georgia, he resided in this building from 1911 to 1919. A historical marker with his information can be found at 3231 Wyoming Ave. in Central El Paso.

What a loss. Hal Marcus was an inspiration, an icon, a visionary, and a community leader. He was an amazing person that was always happy to help the community in whatever way he could. He will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to his entire family.

This is the St. Patrick's Cathedral on Mesa St. Construction started in 1914. The St. Louis architectural firm of Barnett, Haynes, and Barnett designed the church. The style is a blend of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture.

The beautiful painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe located in a niche on the west side of the church is over 300 years old. It is from Zacatecas, Mexico, gifted by an anonymous donor to the Cathedral back in 2002.

The beautiful Stained-glass windows were donated by individual parishioners and installed in 2002. Griffin Studios of Ruidoso are designers of the windows depicting the seven Sacraments.

It's a beauty! Notice the gargoyle, pretty cool!

New Amazing Mural Art painted on the new Medical Center of the Americas Health Clinic located at 4240 Alameda.

Check out this statement from the artists:

“Migration of the Alebrijes”

The mural depicts 4 alebrijes moving through the El Paso desert landscape. The alebrijes are local fauna, a deer, squirrel, eagle and hummingbird. Key features of the Alebrijes are replaced with local cacti, cholla, agave, prickly pear and hedgehog cactus.

Alebrijes can be traced back to Pedro Linares from Mexico City. The message of this mural is acknowledging the migration of alebrijes while portraying them as belonging among their surrounding nature. The patterns on the alebrijes are inspired by the hand painted alebrijes found throughout Mexico and now abroad. This mural is dedicated to the beautiful culture that migrants bring with them.
