Today, we gather to honor a very special girl… Rita.

Now, to some, she may have just been a chicken. But to those who knew her—she was so much more. Rita was personality. Rita was attitude. Rita was the kind of hen who didn’t just live in the coop… she ran it.

She had a way of making herself known. Whether it was the way she strutted across the yard like she owned every inch of it, or how she looked at you like she had thoughts—and wasn’t afraid to judge you just a little—Rita left an impression you didn’t forget.

She was part of the rhythm of the days. The familiar clucks, the excitement at feeding time, the quiet presence that somehow made everything feel a little more complete. It’s funny how something so small can leave such a big space when it’s gone.

Rita reminded us of simple things—slow mornings, fresh air, routines that ground us, and the joy in caring for something outside of ourselves. She didn’t ask for much, but she gave us consistency, laughs, and a connection to the life we’re building.

And if we’re being honest… she probably thought she was the favorite.
(And she might not have been wrong.)

Losing her hurts in a way that not everyone understands—but we do. Because she mattered. Her life mattered. And the love we had for her is real.

So today, we remember Rita not just as a chicken—but as part of our story. Part of our home. Part of our hearts.

Rest easy, Miss Rita.
May your dust baths be endless, your treats plentiful, and your coop forever peaceful.
