Edisto Island Serpentarium

Edisto Island Serpentarium South Carolina's first true Serpentarium! Snakes, Turtles, Alligators and lots more! Season passes available for admission

Operating as usual

We faired the storm well. Very lucky that it went more north than projected. However we won’t be opening today, Saturday October 1 so that we can get all the small debris cleaned around the park and the animals back out where they need to be. We will reopen on Thursday, October 6. Thank you and I hope all of y’all faired as well as you could if you were in the path of Hurricane Ian.

09/28/2022

We are going to open tomorrow starting at 10. Weather permitting we will stay open. If the wind or rain gets to heavy we will have to close early. The kids are out of school so bring them by before the storm rolls in.
We are planning on staying closed Friday so that we can prepare the park for the storm. And we will make a decision for Saturday to be announced.
If plans change we will post them here.
Thank you and everyone stay safe.

09/27/2022

We are watching the approaching storm heading into this weekend. As of now our plans are to still be open Thursday-Saturday 10-4. If it looks like the storm will affect the park we will decide to close. We will keep you posted here. Thank you.

We are open Tuesday-Saturday 10-5 ☔️ or ☀️. We still try to continue on with our planned programs throughout the day from 11-3 at the top of each hour. But if the ⛈ come in to strong we will move to the stage for a similar program and worse case we may have to cancel a program. So bring your 🌂 and come on out and enjoy our reptile park.

Educators:
Now is the time to start booking your school trips to the Edisto Island Serpentarium. Coordinating our facility into your classroom lessons can be very educational and fun.
We are open to field trips Thursday-Saturdays during our schools season. The outdoors of the park will close after the second week in October and reopen in late March/early April. We are also open to bringing larger trips to the park on Wednesday. This would be a great opportunity if there is a specific lesson that you are teaching and would like for us to detail information for you. If interested in booking reach out to us on our website www.edistoserpentarium.com and fill out the field trip form. This will allow us to schedule you for the best date that we have available for your group.
We also offer Outreach programs during the winter months...where we come to your location. The cost will vary according to the programs requested and the location we have to travel too. This form can be found on our website as well.
Join us in educating about reptiles!
(Please share this information with all your educator friends)

Edisto Island Serpentarium

Edisto Island Serpentarium is a seasonal reptile zoo that is open to the public from the last week of March through the first week of December. It offers a variety of reptiles from huge crocodiles to local snakes in order to educate visitors about the beauty and benefits of our scaly neighbors. During most of the season, educational shows are provided nearly every hour of the day. Visitors can also feed turtles and interact with some of the animals after the programs.

The Serpentarium began as the dream of two brothers, Ted and Heyward Clamp, who fell in love with reptiles in their early years. They opened their dream in the summer of 1999 and have been sharing their passion with visitors ever since.

Did you know the distance, in inches, between an alligator's eyes and its nose equals its total body length in feet?

For example, if the distance between a gator's eyes and its nose is three inches, the alligator is three feet long!

Lawrence, the Museum's longtime education alligator, outgrew his habitat and recently moved to the Edisto Island Serpentarium. But, you can meet our newest baby gators (Cheeto, Nubs, Venus and Hissy Fit) and learn more about these amazing - and often misunderstood animals - during our Wednesday afternoon Reptiles of the Lowcountry program. For details and reservations, call (843) 689-6767 ext. 223 or book online at CoastalDiscovery.org.

Happy 2/22/22! We are pleased to introduce you to three new members of our lab! They are part of our live animal teaching collection and serve their species as ambassadors for the true facts and beauty of snakes and were gifted to us by our kind friends at the Edisto Island Serpentarium. Trix is a male ( ). Chevy is a , or timber, ( ) and is named after the classic "chevron" pattern that is unique among the southeastern snakes to this species. He is 1.5 years old. And last, but hardly the least (in character, that is!), we have . Teddy is a 5-month-old canebrake and is named after our dear colleague, Ted Clamp, owner and co-founder of the . Some people are taken by puppies, but I think baby rattlesnakes are absolutely adorable! Just no cuddling, please!

Today we said goodbye to our beloved alligator, Lawrence. It was time for him to move on to a facility with a larger habitat. Lawrence helped to educate so many people about the amazing reptiles we share the Lowcountry with and we will miss him. We are so thankful that the wonderful staff at the Edisto Island Serpentarium will be taking good care of him now.

The Museum is still home to 4 baby gators that you can come and meet during Discovery Lab Open House, Reptiles of the Lowcountry and the summer Critter Meet and Greet.

Please note: The Coastal Discovery Museum and Edisto Island Serpentarium are permitted by South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) to possess alligators. The transfer of Lawrence was also permitted by SCDNR.

Our annual trip to Edisto and the Serpentarium. My grandson loves this place and has a great interest in reptiles and marine life, hoping to one day work with reptiles. We had the opportunity to see both alligator and crocodile feedings on this trip - amazing! and he was able to speak with one of the facility owners regarding his interests. Thank you to the owners and staff of Edisto Island Serpentarium for your hard work and a wonderful, educational enjoyment each year we visit!
