ROC'N Wednesday: Highlighting 1865 by Mona Oman

We are thrilled to share a special highlight in preparation for the Roc-A-Natural Cultural Foundation Inc’s 5th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival. Artist Serena Smith, owner of Mona Oman, has created a beautiful "1865" art piece for our commemorative tree at Tappen Park. This work honors the year of African American freedom in Galveston, Texas.

A huge thank you to Serena for her talent and to Lowe's on Forest Avenue, Staten Island, NY for donating the canvas cloth. To learn more or book Serena for your next project, visit Monaoman.com or follow her on Instagram and Facebook at .

This year's Juneteenth Freedom Parade continues to be significant because we will be marching on Bay Street and through the Rosebank Corridor, which during the 60's through the 80's, people of color were at risk of being beaten if they tried to step foot in Rosebank. On June 19, 2026, we are thrilled to be standing united with our neighboring communities and march through these liberated streets as we commemorate and celebrate the oldest celebration of Freedom in the United States, Freedom Day.
