The Visual Arts Committee of Orcas Center announces the opening of “The Ones That Made It”, a curated show of wood-fired ceramics by local artists Michael Rozzi, Mathew Haeuser, Yuriko, Sam and Ayame Bullock, Sharon Ho, Sean Roberts, Penny Sharp and Mary Jane Elgin on June 26, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Intrigued by the traditional craft of firing pottery using wood as fuel, they custom-built a kiln on Orcas and began firing in 2020. Each piece is an exploration of form and surface marked by the lick of fire, and the burning ash flying through a closed chamber for 18-20 hours. Every firing provides lessons for the next, leading this group of nine on a winding path of trial and discovery.

“The Ones That Made It” will be on display from June 26 to July 28. Live entertainment and complimentary refreshments will be provided at the opening on Friday.

Also opening is the VAC Community Show in the Madrona Room, “Color, Texture, and Pattern”. For this show, the VAC welcomes art in which color, texture and/or pattern is a central feature of the work. This is a broad theme for abstract or representational art in all mediums. Community shows are open to ALL island artists, beginning and experienced alike. The purpose is to showcase island art and celebrate our creative neighbors.

We hope to see you at the opening!

GIVE ORCAS GAME DAYS!

The first of our game days is nearly upon us…
Tomorrow is ‘unique donor day’, where each nonprofit competes for the most unique individual donors.

We invite you to consider donating to our kitchen restoration project, seeking to expand the use and functionality of Orcas Center’s kitchen for the whole community.

We’re also looking forward to both ‘Weekend Games’ and ‘Ben Franklin Day’ (more info soon!).

Until then, and no matter where you choose to donate, happy Give Orcas!

During the month of May, Art for Orcas Kids celebrates Arts Education Month with the Annual Student Art Exhibit at Orcas Center.

The exhibit (on display from April 24-May 26) represents a full school year of creative exploration from Kindergarten through 12th Grade, including sculpture, painting, mixed media and collage.

Thank you to all who joined us for the exhibit opening and a special thank you to the VAC volunteers who helped set up the exhibit - Julia Summers, Sarah Crigger, Carol Ann Anderson, Marjorie Taylor, Bethany Marie and Julie Rusby plus all the organization provided by Amber Taylor, Leon Rosenblatt and Kathleen Youngren.

We hope you will visit and join us in celebrating the artistic growth and accomplishments of Orcas Island public school students.

Warmly,
Art for Orcas Kids

Donate at the link in our bio!

Orcas Island Community Foundation’s 2026 Spring GiveOrcas Campaign is now open and runs through May 21 at www.giveorcas.org. This is your chance to support 32 local nonprofit organizations that are crucial to sustaining and enhancing the quality of life on our island.

Orcas Center is seeking a $25,000 grant to upgrade our kitchen with commercial certification to expand our community impact. Our kitchen has long supported events, performances and community celebrations, yet our current kitchen limits what’s possible. We hope to transform our kitchen into a certified commercial space by installing commercial-grade fixtures — such as a grease trap, fire-suppression range hood, and ice maker — and making essential repairs to the existing flooring, counters, plumbing, and electrical systems. Commercial certification will support local food entrepreneurs, increase opportunities for earned revenue, and deepen the Orcas Center’s role as a true gathering place for the island. This investment strengthens not just our facility but also the community connections within it.
