It’s been a while since I posted any artwork, so here is one I finished the first of March. It was a commission.

Pencils used:
3B, 2B, HB, 2H, and 6H. I use the latter pencil to flatten the paper’s surface to get a smoother texture. It’s hard to tell in a photo, but the water appears glassy.

Finished another small drawing today. You might be wondering, “what’s with all the cat drawings? Is he just doing cats, now?” No. I just started doing them because they looked hard and I wanted to try and figure it out. It’s been fun. I’ve learned so much about how to make a variety of textures. I’ve also never worked with the negative space behind my subjects before. I feel that these latest subjects have more of a sense of presence in the overall piece.

If you want to memorialize one of your most loved pets, let me know. I’ll see what I can do for you. Just send a PM.

My original post of Romeo II was shared from my personal page. Here, on my drawing page, I’ll share some in progress photos of the process. I’m entertaining the idea of making some tutorials, but I’m hesitant. Any thoughts?

Pencils used: Staedtler Mars Lumograph 2H, HB, 2B, 3B

Erasers: Staedtler Mars plastic, Prismacolor kneadable eraser, General’s kneadable eraser, Mars Zero 2.3mm stick eraser

The background was masked off and I used a large makeup brush to dust graphite to give distance to the background.

Paper is Strathmore 400 series. I buy it local in 20x30 sheets. Humidity can make it feel soft, so caution is used to ensure tearing doesn’t happen.

I finished another drawing today. In the last 4 months, I’ve finished 12; 11 cats and one dog. I’d never drawn a cat before, so I felt this was a good time to attempt something that looked very difficult. I wasn’t sure how I was going pull it off, and I was anxious. During this time, I’d gained more working knowledge of the Pencil than I ever have.

As simple as it seems, the range of dark/light is so much more than that. A lighter pencil is warmer than a darker one, and there are groups that have their own warmth or coolness. All of my recent drawings were rendered with a 2B pencil. I felt it would blend the best with the other 3 pencils I was using when it came to working in the details.

The Pencil is more than just for coloring in test bubbles, doodling, and rendering an underpainting. When given proper attention, one can create moods and convincing shadows as effectively as any painter who uses pigments in the same way.

Thank you all for your time and continued inspiration.

Enjoy this drawing of Romeo the Cat, who is King when resting on Mom’s forearm. I finished this yesterday.

I just finished this super cool commission last night. It took me just over a week to complete at 75 hours. It’s one drawing of 3 kitties. Each kitty “photo” is 4x6” with a quarter inch border. The entire piece is 17.5 x 9”. I believe this is a memorial, as all kitties have passed on. I added the photo corners for a touch of nostalgia. I figured it would be a nice touch.

From left to right, Hobo, Sq**rt, and Mouse. They were all rescues. If you want something that will last the rest of your life, something to pass on to the next generation, let me know. I love bringing things to life.

Today, I finished a drawing of Fred the Dog. To know the story of Fred is to know survival and determination. To know his owner, though, is to know kindness and compassion on a level many of us wouldn’t recognize.

Finished yet another kitty drawing. This one had challenges of its own, such as the fur.
I decided to take more pics of my progress as I entered new phases of the piece. One of my favorites, is when I begin really adding the darks once the image has been rendered. This not only adds to the realism, but places the viewer along side the subject. When I compare the values between the darkest areas and the lightest ones, it’s easier for me to see the mid-tones. Then I can adjust.

These 5 drawings of Buddy have been finished for a while, and I’ve neglected posting them. It was interesting drawing all of these. Like with any repetitive action, I got better as I went along. The fur made more sense, my strokes came more naturally, and I felt I was able to get the contrast down just the way I wanted it. I changed all of them from the original photo, as I wanted to make Buddy the center of attention.
If you’re interested in some artwork, just send me a message. It’s an investment you’ll have for the rest of your life.

Here’s my fourth sketch in my Buddy collection. I’m not sure what I’ll be titling all of these. He’s in the window for most of them, getting his tan in.

This isn’t finished yet, as I still need to balance the values quite a bit more. The middle picture shows where I’ve finally landed on where I want everything. From that point, it’s fill in and detail time.
In every drawing, I find one certain object to focus intense detail on. The stack of papers and laptop is becoming that area…
I’m still “carving” black into the edge of the table. I stopped here, as I didn’t want it smearing across the drawing.

I know you all enjoy the in-progress nonsense… 😉

I just finished this little DRAWING of Suzie. We had our 30th anniversary last week and I wanted to have it done, but the kitty drawing was first.

We took a family vacation to McCall, ID about 7 years ago and I took this reference picture. I cropped it down a bit. The drawing is 5x7”.

Her lace undershirt is the natural color of the paper, although it looks lighter.

I’ve been doing a lot of small sketches lately. I find that they keep my attention, which allows me to focus on learning from what I’m doing.
I try to keep the number of pencils I use to 3. For Buddy, I redominantly used a Staedtler Mars Lumograph HB to gradually work in the median value of the drawing. I would then use a 2B for the darkest areas, shaded directly on top of the lighter areas, using my finger to smudge them lightly together. I used a 2H for the lighter areas and places where light fur meets dark. Most importantly, is the use of a Prismacolor kneadable eraser to gradually lift out areas and create texture. When I add dark pencil back in, it creates layers. The lightest areas of the image are bare paper. I keep it clean with the kneadable eraser.
