Music Director Ruth Reinhardt shares in the video below why the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School, the Orchestra and your support of both are so important to this community. We hope that you'll give generously. Funds raised support:

*Orchestra concerts at The VETS, and in communities around the state that reach over 100,000 people annually - many free and all with affordable pricing options.

*Financial aid for the Music School so that 1,200 plus students can participate in lessons, classes and ensembles based on their passion, talent and dedication - not their ability to pay, including Victoria's Dream Project students.

*Link Up education program, which supports teachers and furthers music literacy for over 10,000 students in grades 3-5 from over 90 schools across our region each year.

"Of all the great piano concertos, “Rach 3” contains the highest number of notes per second in the solo part. Yet its extraordinary demands go far beyond mere mechanical virtuosity – this arguably last great romantic piano concerto is also steeped in introspection and nuance. The melody in the opening bars, reminiscent of an ancient Russian liturgical chant, was meant, in Rachmaninoff’s own words, to 'sing on the piano as a singer would.'”

"Igor Stravinsky, though irrefutably known today, alongside Bartók, as one of the giants of modern music, was not Sergei Diaghilev’s first choice for an ambitious new project designed to the centerpiece for 1910 Paris season of the newly formed Ballet Russes. 'The Firebird', based on a character from Russian folklore symbolizing rebirth, beauty, and magic, was to be a comprehensive, seamlessly integrated work of art encompassing music, theater, and visual design, so not just any composer would do."

Still deciding? Before the first note sounds, here are seven reasons you’ll want to secure your seats for next Saturday's 2026 Annual Gala Celebration - Trifonov Plays Rachmaninoff today:

🎹 1. A Once-in-a-Generation Virtuoso
Daniil Trifonov is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his generation. His technique is astonishing — effortless speed, clarity, and power — but always in service of the music, not flash for its own sake.

🏆 2. Major International Prize Winner
He won both the Gold Medal and Grand Prix at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition (one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world). That win launched his international career overnight.

🌟 3. Praised by Legends
After hearing him, Martha Argerich famously said he has “everything and more.” Praise from an icon like Argerich carries enormous weight in the classical world.

🎼 4. Deep Connection to Rachmaninoff
Trifonov has recorded and performed Rachmaninoff extensively, including the complete piano concertos. Critics often note that he combines Russian intensity with poetic lyricism — an ideal match for Rachmaninoff’s sweeping emotion and technical demands.

🎶 5. More Than a Performer
He’s also a composer. That creative mind gives his interpretations unusual depth — he shapes phrases and colors in ways that feel spontaneous and imaginative.

🌍 6. International Star Power
He performs regularly with the world’s top orchestras and in major halls like Carnegie Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, and the Concertgebouw — making his first appearance with the RI Phil a major event.

❤️ 7. Emotional Range
Audiences often remark that he can move from thunderous power to intimate delicacy within a single phrase. For Rachmaninoff, that emotional sweep is electrifying.

Experience Daniil Trifonov live in concert when he joins Music Director Ruth Reinhardt, violist Matthew Sinno and your RI Philharmonic Orchestra for the following program:

BARTÓK: Viola Concerto, Mvts. II & III
(Featuring Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School Matthew Sinno, Associate Principal Viola, Dallas Symphony Orchestra)

STRAVINSKY: The Firebird: Suite (1919)
RACHMANINOFF: Piano Concerto No.3

"In this concerto, countless music lovers have discovered a profoundly lyrical, spiritual and life affirming work. Next Saturday, we will hear the final two movements, performed by Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School Alumnus Matthew Sinno, as they evolve from moments of great reverence and pathos to infectious expressions of folk-inspired exuberance. There is good reason that this is the most performed and recorded viola concerto in history."
