This gorgeous and powerful 9,000-square foot mural in front of the historic Manufacturers Village Artists in East Orange will be officially unveiled to the public on Sunday, April 25, between 2–4 p.m.
After eleven months of planning, sixteen commissioned artists and over 30 volunteers worked tirelessly for the past 10 days to bring this giant mural to life. Many of whom are artists and friends of Montclair Art Museum.
A documentary is being made of the entire process directed by New Jersey-based filmmaker Kiymora Smith. The film will be shown this summer at MAM.

Here’s a shot from Friday’s mural project planning session with Linda Gartrell Street of Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate, Llc, Manufacturers Village Artists, ACEO President Helena Branch and Lead Artist Malcolm Rolling of Yendor, hosted in the Tom Nussbaum studio at Manufacturer’s Village.
Malcolm Rolling, a lifelong East Orange resident, painter and muralist, was engaged to design the outline structure for the Black Lives Matter Mural at Manufacturer’s Village. After extensive research, he chose a typeface created by Tre Seals, an African American Designer & Typographer. The selected typeface is titled Marsha, inspired by Marsha P. Johnson, an African American, a transgender woman from New Jersey, and a prominent figure in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969.
Once the rain stops, Malcolm and his team will prime the asphalt surface and create the letter outlines with drop shadows. This will set the stage (actually the parking lot) for the other fifteen commissioned artists to paint their individually unique letter designs.
Tagging my friend Steven Dibdin who is looking for 600-800 square feet of space on the ground floor. Had been out in Brooklyn in shared space and wants to get closer to home. I know these don't come up often, but maybe someone is looking to sublet or knows of other opportunities in the area? He's an industrial designer (very cool, custom work for an international clientele).

East Orange BLM Mural Project
In cities large and small around the world, the ages old medium of public art is emerging as a means to communicate the priorities, passions and purpose of diverse communities! The global imperative of the Black Lives Matter movement has propelled the use of this powerful visual messaging tool, which serves as a companion to the activism of demonstrations, protest marches, etc.
The Manufacturer’s Village Artists (MVA) Black Lives Matter Mural Project is a community initiative for change, launched in Fall 2020 in East Orange, NJ. Combining the individual works of a talented array of artists, the community mural will be prominently located at the City’s historic Manufacturers Village. Built in the 1880s, this Victorian industrial complex was the original corporate headquarters of Johnson & Johnson, then known as Seabury and Johnson. It has since transformed into a diverse community of creative makers and small businesses and is now a nexus for artists working in a variety of creative practices.
Manufacturers Village continues to be operated by direct descendants of the Seabury family, the Hubert family, who initiated the Black Lives Matter Mural Project to make a bold, supportive statement and to designate Manufacturers Village and the City of East Orange as a place of creativity, community, and social awareness.
We’re gathering materials (courtesy of Liquitex Artist Materials) and setting the stage for this important initiative!
