I made my first short docs nearly six years ago in Manufacturers Village, a colossal 19th century Johnson & Johnson factory in East Orange, NJ that today houses artists, artisans and craftspeople of every stripe. The took me in, and offered their boundless friendship, stories, and even a studio of my own (thanks !!)
It was a gift shooting my latest doc at the Village with & helmed by the brilliant , and I can’t wait for you to watch.

I sent out personal invites and emails to friends and supporters of my work. But life has different plans for me this weekend and I missed the opening night last night and will miss today and tomorrow for personal reasons. Not to worry all is well and will be well. In the meantime here is a video of the studio I’m so grateful I took on Thursday night right before I left for the day. I am so grateful to have this print from Will Wilson’s Talking Tintype created to benefit the Coe Center in Santa Fe. Using the app Talking Tintypes, visitors to my studio will be able to watch this photograph taken by Will using a 19th century process come alive. Madrienne Salgado is a Jingle Dress dancer and PR Manager for the Muckleshoot Tribe. Here’s a piece I will be showing at Open Studios next week and here’s a bit about my work. Christine Romanell’s colorful wall sculptures and installations explore non-repeating patterns informed by cosmology and physics, while rooting itself in applied design similar to Islamic patterning. Her use of rotational symmetry to generate dimensional forms allude to movement and create an event horizon, a space where the infinite tessellations of universal physics can intersect with patterns, collapsing the divide between the theoretical and the real. Romanell lives and works in New Jersey where she’s on the board of Manufacturers Village Artists space in East Orange. She is the founder and editor of NotWhatItIs art blog. Her work has been discussed in Hyperallergic, MIT Technology Review, Art and Cake, ArtFuse, ArtSpiel and WoArt. Her sculptures have been included in ArtPrize and she is a recipient of an NEA grant for her work through Chashama in NYC. She has lectured at Pratt University and taught at the College of St Elizabeth. Her BFA is from the School of Visual Arts (NYC) and her MFA is from Montclair State University (Montclair NJ.)

Manufacturers Village Artist Studios, located in an 1880’s industrial complex building in East Orange, NJ, will open its doors to the studios of over 60 different artists Saturday and Sunday, October 16th and 17th,2021. The enclave, just minutes from Thomas Edison's original workshop houses artists working in a variety of mediums. Visitors will be welcomed into the studios of professional painters, sculptors, woodworkers, quilters, printmakers, photographers, multi-media artists, and more. Artwork will also be available for purchase. “I love Visiting Manufacturer’s Village. First, there are the buildings, with the great catwalks, secret stairwells, and whispered industrial histories. Walk into one of 60 studios and find each room its own hub for manufacturing works of art, mapping out thoughts and dreams. Step in further and you can enter into conversation with the artists themselves – an enlightening experience to hear first-hand how ideas are translated into physical works of art, and to gain an understanding of the artistic processes (so unique and varied), materials, influences, and future plans. It’s an afternoon resplendent with discovery (and the possibility to acquire a new artwork for your home). The artists in this Village are exceptional, participating in exhibitions at the community, national and international levels. The once-a-year Open Studios at Village is truly not to be missed!” says Alice Momm, proprietor AMCS, Curatorial Services, and Visual Artist, New York, N.Y. The self-guided tour of studios also includes an opportunity to view the East Orange Community Black Lives Matter Mural, one of the state’s largest and most beautiful murals. Painted in the spring of 2021, this 9,000 square foot mural was created by sixteen artists of color from the greater East Orange Community, some of whom will be present at the event.
