I listened in as my sister conversed on the phone with Mother Nature at the Susan Fox tent at the Wickford Art Festival.

🌿Hi Mother Nature,
Im so glad to speak with you today. Yes, I just wanted to tell you that Im grateful that you remind me to be gentle, and also fierce when I need to be. You bring me to a space that feels really settled. When its really cold, we still go to the playground. We’re like the only ones there. So, I see you and I love you, and I’m doing my best to protect you in the ways that I know how. And I’m also really glad that you speak through my sister, because she’s going to make a difference for you and Im going to be right next to her, helping her. So, I love you and Im really glad to call you today and next time Im just going to talk out loud because I know you hear me.

So well said, My Sister. How lucky we are to have you.😇

The zucchinis are multiplying!
When one gets away, I just shred it up and turn it into bread!
During summer visits, my gram would always have zucchini fritters ready for me to eat when I arrived, and sent me back to NYC with zucchini breads to stash in my freezer. Zucchini always tastes like home.
I have modified her recipe over the years, but the essence is unchangeable.

Elinor Thompson, my high school art teacher, attends Wrapped in Nature🌿
She arrived in an orange Japanese kimono paired with a one of a kind Kelly green astroturf handbag, circa 1998, by me!
The portfolio class, where I created the work that gained me acceptance into RISD, concluded with a final project, in which I chose to create a collection of handbags designed from found materials. Mrs. Thompson purchased this one from me, complete with household hardware, and kept it all these years. The instant I saw it, a circle linked. I remember exactly constructing that piece on the giant oval table in the breezeway, full of materials that I would rifle through, that were one garage bag away from going to the landfill. The work had started way back then. I was conscious of the ideas of sustainability, and now it has evolved to something more distinct, with deep meaning and impact, tapping into our relationship with the environment, using the object to provoke thought rather than something to consume.
⚡️Mrs. Thompson is obviously electric. ⚡️
Her belief in students set her apart. The fun, the excitement, the energy she brought to class was just as vital as the knowledge. It was never lost on me. I loved it from the start. I remember how mind-expanding it felt to go to art class. To look at something small and magnify it 10x on paper, literally blew my mind! How thankful I am to have been a recipient of her gifts as her student.

Today I had the pleasure of asking people if they would like to call Mother Nature. “Using your imagination, pick up the receiver and let her know what you are grateful for…”

Thank you Susan Fox for this thought-provoking activity at the Wickford Art Festival this weekend! It was dear, genuine, quiet, vulnerable and not easy.
Let’s get comfortable talking to Mother, and for expressing gratitude for all that she provides in our life. This type of practice will give us strength to stand up for her with our voices and our actions.

And if it feels hard to talk out loud, begin with a whisper. The most important thing is to begin.

I am inspired by the kids who created this stand, a “pop-up shop” while on vacation at the campground. New merch arriving daily, limited supply, handmade, meet the artists. I get a dopamine hit supporting this type of creativity.

Can we transform our consumer habits to seek out and support what is crafted by hand rather than shopping at big box stores?
