Dolly Parton was asked how she felt about the "dumb blonde" jokes that followed her during a 1992 interview on the TV tabloid show A Current Affair.

She quipped, "I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb… and I’m not blonde either.”

The joke can be traced back even further, her first charting single was "Dumb Blonde", released in 1966. The chorus draws the line she spent a career proving: "Just because I'm blonde / Don't think I'm dumb / 'Cause this dumb blonde ain't nobody's fool."

Throughout Dolly's career, her exaggerated glamour got her underestimated everywhere she went. However, she leaned into the stereotype hard enough that no one else could use it against her.
