Each month, I send a free printable sticker sheet made from one of my botanical sketches to my studio list. These drawings begin in the garden, on walks, or in the studio - quick observations of flowers, stems, leaves, and the small natural forms that keep finding their way into my paintings, ceramics, and vases.

September’s studio mailing celebrates the peony which is one of the most extravagant and surprisingly resilient flowers in my garden.

Peonies have been cultivated in China for centuries, where they became favorites of the imperial court and symbols of beauty, prosperity and honor. Their magnificent layers of petals eventually made them beloved around the world, from formal gardens to old-fashioned cottage borders.

Here in the mountains, their beauty feels especially improbable.

Our alpine environment can be so harsh: deep snow, bitter cold, intense sun and an extraordinarily short growing season. Yet every spring, my peonies push their way back through the earth. By early summer, their tightly furled buds open into enormous, ruffled flowers. Their return surprises me every year.

They appear far too delicate for this landscape, but they endure.

That combination of softness and strength inspired my September peony sticker. A small celebration of beauty that returns, even after the hardest seasons.

Three weeks in the making…throwing, trimming, bisque firing, glazing and tonight the finale: glaze firing!!! Hope to have all the finished pieces in my hands to photograph in the next 48 hours:)

As I made these vessels it dawned on me that the making process would be equivalent to weaving a canvas for a painting before being able to paint the image. Hats off to those ceramic artists who dig and process their own clay: that’s like growing the cotton on top of that!

Save the date 💙

On Sunday, May 24, Jennifer Howland Kennedy and I are doing a small Open Studio Sale + Vail Market Booth Test Run as we prepare for the Vail Art & Farmers Market this summer.

We’ll be setting up the booth display, taking photos, and offering a first look at new ceramics, paintings and other surprises before they go to market.

It will be casual, creative, and a little behind-the-scenes. Exactly the kind of test run we need before the market season begins.
