I spent way too long making this tiny version of the Doylestown Intelligencer building out of paper. It's about six inches tall, from the bottom step to the tippity top of the ... what do you call that thing?
I think this is probably my favorite building in Doylestown. Not just because it was the original building for the newspaper job that got me hooked on local history, but also because well, just look at it.
It was designed and built by two architects — Thomas Cernea and Addison Hutton — but in 1876, the year it was completed, Cernea died (only in his 40s) and Hutton finished the job alone.
A long time ago when I was working as the librarian for the newspaper, one of our facilities guys brought me a huge bin of ancient paper from the attic. The place had made newspapers but they were also doing odd print jobs for anybody who needed stationary or blank checks or advertisements or whatever, and he had found a ton of them left up in the attic, sitting there since the 1880s.
I used tiny scraps of some of those papers to line the inside of the windows of the paper building. I like the idea that they went back where they came from, kind of.
