Here’s a look at the process of one of our Visual Arts students at SCI using the grid technique to draw a heron from a reference image.

By breaking the image into smaller sections, students can focus on proportion, placement, and detail one square at a time. Grids are a great tool for creating precise and proportionate drawings of specific subjects, such as animals, people, landscapes, and more. 📐

From reference to canvas.

Here’s a look at another from the JTVCC Prison Arts studio.

Using a photograph for inspiration, this artist is recreating a quiet landscape of flowing water, surrounding foliage, and a layer of fog in the distance.

There’s still more to come, but the scene is already taking shape. Stay tuned to see how the finished painting compares to the original reference!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Prison Arts booth at the Apple Scrapple Festival this past Saturday! We loved sharing our artists’ work, talking with the community, and seeing some familiar faces return to support the program again this year.

A special thank you to everyone who took the time to leave comments and words of encouragement for our artists. Being able to bring that positive feedback back to them makes these community events even more meaningful.

We appreciate all the support and look forward to seeing you again next year!

to last year's Apple Scrapple Festival 🍎

We had a great time bringing the Delaware Prison Arts Program to the Apple Scrapple Festival last year, sharing artwork with the community and meeting so many people along the way. So many community members stopped by to admire the artwork, ask about the program, and even take home paintings created by artists they personally knew.

Hearing everyone's stories and feedback was such a positive experience, as well as getting to know the other local vendors who have become Apple Scrapple regulars.

And we’re coming back this year! Join us in Bridgeville this Saturday for another full day of art, vendors, food, entertainment, and everything Apple Scrapple.

We’ll see you there! 🐷

🐢The Under the Sea Mural is SCI Complete! 🌊

After weeks of planning, painting, collaborating, and adding the finishing details, the first mural project done by the Visual Arts class at Sussex Correctional Institution is officially complete.

Students worked together to transform the original concept into a colorful underwater scene filled with sea life, bringing their individual skills and creativity together to create one finished piece.

Projects like this are about more than the final artwork. Throughout the process, students practiced teamwork, communication, patience, problem-solving, and attention to detail, all while learning from one another and contributing to a shared goal.

We look forward to seeing what they will create next.
